Document VersionRelease DateDetail209/12/2017Updated the advisory's Description, Scope and Resolution with more detail.101/09/2017Original Document Release.Certain models of the HPE OfficeConnect 1950 and HPE FlexNetwork 5130 EI switches manufactured between April 2015 and April 2016 may experience boot up issues caused by corrupted startup image files. When this occurs, the switch will either fail to start or enter into basic boot level CLI (Command Line Interface) prompt. The 4-bit and 8-bit NAND flash memory were introduced during 2015 to replace the original 1-bit flash. It has recently been discovered, when read errors occur on the multi-bit flash, there is a low probability that the ECC feature will not function properly in recovering the error. As a result, the symptoms boot up issues described above may be experienced. Note this issue only occurs when both of the following conditions below are met:1. Error is detected during read operation2. ECC fails to correct the bit errorBelow are examples of possible symptoms during the bootup process.1. Invalid system image file.********************************************************************************** HP 5130-48G-2SFP+-2XGT EI Switch BOOTROM, Version 112*********************************************************************************Copyright (c) 2010-2014 Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.Creation Date : Sep 10 2014, 17:28:17CPU Clock Speed : 1000MHzMemory Size : 1024MBFlash Size : 512MBCPLD Version : 001PCB Version : Ver.DMac Address : 5c8a3868f707Press Ctrl+B to access EXTENDED BOOT MENU...0 Loading the main image files...Loading file flash:/5130ei-cmw710-system-r3108p01.bin...........................................................Done.Image file flash:/5130ei-cmw710-system-r3108p01.bin is invalid!Loading the backup image files...The image does not exist!Loading images fails.Loading the main boot and system image files...Loading file flash:/5130ei-cmw710-system-r3108p01.bin...........................................................Done.Image file flash:/5130ei-cmw710-system-r3108p01.bin is invalid!Loading the backup boot and system image files...The image does not exist!Loading images fails.Loading the main boot image...Loading file flash:/5130ei-cmw710-boot-r3108p01.bin...........Done.Image file flash:/5130ei-cmw710-boot-r3108p01.bin is self-decompressing.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................Done.System is starting...<boot>2. Below is a sample output of the command:[HPE]display device manuinfoDEVICE_NAME : 1950 24G 2SFP+ 2XGT JG960ADEVICE_SERIAL_NUMBER : CN59GQ109BMAC_ADDRESS : 3897-D699-202BMANUFACTURING_DATE : 2015-09-18VENDOR_NAME : HPENOTE: Any switch models not listed in the table above are unaffected by this issue.
Perform the following steps to resolve this issue:Backup the current configuration.Upgrade the BootWare version to 500. (This version is used temporarily to repair and format the flash memory.)Upgrade the software version to R3115P07 or later. (During the software upgrade, the BootWare is automatically restored to the matching version for the software, which is BootWare 146 for R3115P07.)Important Note:During the upgrade of BootWare version to 500, the flash memory will be repaired and formatted. This step takes about 35 minutes. Plan and allow enough downtime to minimize service interruption. After the flash memory is repaired, it is automatically formatted. Backup the configuration and data before the upgrade to avoid data loss. The BootWare file namedS5130EI-BTM-500.btwcan be obtained by contacting HPE Technical Support; it is used in step 2 above. For the switch models listed in the SCOPE section, the software cannot be downgraded to earlier versions after it is upgraded to R3115P07 or later version. If step 1 is performed on switch models NOT listed in the SCOPE section, the flash memory will NOT be repaired, and startup process will continue without formatting of the flash memory. The example below shows the procedure for a 5130 EI switch; the steps are similar for 1950 switches to use as a guide.1. Before the upgrade, backup the current configuration.<HP>saveThe current configuration will be written to the device. Are you sure?
