When the last snapshot of a Thin Provisioned Virtual Volume (TPVV) with two snapdata (SD) spaces (TPVV not TPSD) is removed, the HP 3PAR InServ system internally removes the space associated with the TPVV’s snapshot. The same space recovery action is performed when thefreespaceCLI command is used on a TPVV. Due to a software issue, the act of cleaning up the snapshot space might lead to a fatal software exception that results in one or more controller nodes going offline (restarting).
This issue affects the HP 3PAR system manager and HP 3PAR S-Class, E-Class, T-Class, and F-Class InServ systems running InForm OS 2.3.1 or 2.3.1 MU1.
A patch is available for InForm 2.3.1 (patch P04) and InForm 2.3.1 MU1 (patch P03) that will prevent the issue leading to controller nodes going offline. These fixes are included in subsequent releases of the InForm operating system.After the patch is installed, the CLI commandfreespacewill be disabled for TPVVs. Users can continue to use thefreespacecommand for CPVVs.As a result of the installation of this patch, when the last snapshot of a TPVV/CPVV is removed, the association between the snapshot data space and the TPVV/CPVV is retained, and unused space remains associated with the TPVV/CPVV.
