VMware vSphere Distributed Power Management (DPM) fails to register the HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 HPE Integrated Lights-Out 7 (iLO 7) IP address and login credential in vCenter. This occurs when vSphere Distributed Power Management (DPM) is enabled in a Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) cluster configured with the HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 and HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 IPMI/iLO settings must be registered in vCenter Power Management. When this occurs, the following message is displayed:A specific parameter was not correct: ipmiInfo. When vSphere DPM needs to adjust the power state of the HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 within a cluster based on the resource demands of the virtual machines running, vSphere DPM is unable to power the HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 on or off through iLO 7.
Any HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 with iLO 7 firmware version 1.12 or lower, running VMware 8.0U3e.This does not occur with iLO 6. ESXi versions earlier than 8.0U3 patch 05 do not support the HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 with iLO 7.
The vCenter DPM currently relies on IPMI Cipher Suite 3 to communicate with BMC devices; iLO 7 no longer supports Cipher 3 and only supports Cipher 17 for improved security. For HPE iLO, when the IPMI call fails, vCenter switches over to the RIBCL interface. However, since iLO 7 has also deprecated the RIBCL interface, vCenter fails to communicate with iLO 7 using any of the current code paths. The iLO 7 firmware is targeted to re-enable IPMI Cipher 3 support in a future firmware release. The updated iLO 7 firmware will allow adding the HPE Compute Gen12 iLO 7 to vCenter's Power Management. After the iLO 7 firmware upgrade, enable "IPMI/DCMI over LAN" in UEFI System utilities (RBSU) iLO 7 web interface --> Security --> Quick Links --> Access -->IPMI, then provide the iLO IP address, MAC address, and user's login credentials in vCenter through server host --> Configure --> System --> Power Management --> IPMI/iLO Settings for Power Management.
