On any HPE server configured with either of the HPE network adapters with firmware combo image v8.52.21 (or prior) listed in the Scope section below, an unexpected system reset or shutdown may occur due to a false temperature reading. When this occurs, Server Critical Fault, Critical Temperature Threshold Exceeded or System Overheating messages similar to the following may be logged in the Integrated Management Log (IML): Example 1: Environment,0x0027,Cooling,12.24.2020 18:10:49,218: Critical Temperature Threshold Exceeded ACTION:Be sure the fan configuration meets the functional requirements of the server. See the server documentation. Critical,101,61101,0x0014,System Error,0x0007,Other,12.24.2020 18:10:49,219: Server Critical Fault (Service Information: Fault Type Unknown, Flexible LOM, LOM 1 VRD (80h)) ACTION:Gather Active Health System logs and create a support case. Informational,101,61145,0x0002,Machine Environment,0x0038,Cooling,12.24.2020 18:10:54,220: Server is operational again after thermal shutdown Example 2: Caution,295,17970,0x0002,Machine Environment,0x0013,Cooling,12.18.2020 03:53:03,119: System Overheating (Temperature Sensor 15, Location I/O Board, Temperature 102) ACTION:Check fans, processor heat sink and air baffles installation. Critical,295,17972,0x000E,OS,0x0002,Other,12.18.2020 03:53:03,120: Automatic Operating System Shutdown Initiated Due to Overheat Condition ACTION:Check simultaneously logged messages for cause of shutdown and address those issues accordingly." Note: The thermal shutdown message is caused by a false temperature reading. Neither the server nor the network adapter experience an over-temperature condition.

For events in Integrated Management Log (IML) pointing to a "Temperature Sensor", check in the HPE Integrated Lights Out (iLO) graphical user interface ( Power & Thermal -> Temperatures -> Sensor Data ) which PCI slot the sensor belongs to. Then check in iLO GUI ( System Information -> Device Inventory ) if the used network adapter is in the Scope section of this Advisory.
