On any HPE ProLiant server running any Linux Operating System and configured with any of the HPE network adapters running the igb driver listed in the Scope section below, the network adapters cannot enable Virtual Function (VF) links when using Single Root Input/Output Virtualization (SR-IOV) and when the sysfs command is executed. This command could normally work on kernel 3.8.x (or later) and on Red Hat distributions version 6.7 (or later); however, this issue occurs because the driver does not support the sysfs command.

To resolve this issue, use the max_vfs parameter when executing the modprobe igb command, as this parameter adds support for Single Root Input/Output Virtualization (SR-IOV). This parameter forces the igb driver to spawn up to max_vfs worth of virtual functions.Note:If both "Single Root Input/Output Virtualization (SR-IOV) unsupported" and "supported" devices are in the same system and the igb Out-of-Box (OOB) driver is being used, the system will fail to create Virtual Functions when max_vfs=N is applied, and the following message will be displayed:[ 3767.634544] igb: Intel(R) Gigabit Ethernet Linux Driver - version 5.18.7[ 3767.634549] igb: Copyright(c) 2007 - 2024 Intel Corporation.[ 3767.635256] igb: 0000:01:00.0: igb_validate_option: max_vfs - SR-IOV VF devices set to 4[ 3767.635261] igb: 0000:01:00.0: igb_check_options: SR-IOV option max_vfs not supported.Remember to specify the Virtual Function numbers for each port, for example: "max_vfs=N,N,N,N,".The igb Out-of-Box (OOB) driver will skip the creation of corresponding Virtual Functions if the probed device does not support Single Root Input/Output Virtualization (SR-IOV).Revision HistoryDocument VersionRelease DateDetails2April 1, 2025Additional information has been added to the Resolution section.1March 30, 2020Original Document Release.
