On any HPE Server configured with any of the network adapters listed in the Scope section below, the iSCSI LUN is visible to Microsoft Windows, Linux and even during Power on Self-Test (POST), but if an installation of a VMware Operating System is performed and the installer is started, the iSCSI LUN disappears.HPE Marvell FastLinQ based network adapters do include the function of Hardware Dependent iSCSI acceleration; however, while they support iSCSI Offload, not all prerequisite networking services are provided by the hardware (DHCP/ARP, etc). For these services, the network adapters depend on the Operating System iSCSI components, which are not available during the boot phase. This means that in order to use iSCSI Boot from SAN (BFS) for VMware ESXi a software solution as described in the "Workaround" Section of this advisory is necessary. This issue only impacts Hardware accelerated ISCSI BFS and Hardware FCoE Boot from SAN is not impaired in any way.

For Hardware dependent iSCSI adapters (e.g., Marvell FastLinQ CNAs), VMware supports iSCSI boot only with software iSCSI. After VMware ESXi boots up, offloaded iSCSI can be used on these network adapters.
