Document VersionRelease DateDetails207/07/2017Updated with ProLiant m710x download components107/06/2017Original document releaseIMPORTANT: The System ROM upgrade is considered a critical fix and is required to prevent the issue detailed below. HPE strongly recommends immediate application of this critical fix. Neglecting to perform the required action could leave the server in an unstable condition, which could potentially result in sub-optimal server performance, server lock-ups or failures, ungraceful server shutdowns, or data corruption or loss. By disregarding this notification and not performing the recommended resolution, the customer accepts the risk of incurring future related events.Intel has identified a processor issue with Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 and Intel Xeon E3-1200 v6 processor, 6th generation Intel Core i3 processor, 7th generation Intel Core i3 processor, and Intel Pentium G-series processor in which a complex number of concurrent micro-architectural conditions may result in unpredictable system behavior when Intel Hyperthreading is enabled. The issue requires short loops of less than 64 instructions that use the AH, BH, CH, or DH registers as well as their corresponding wider registers (e.g. RAX, EAX, or AX for AH) when both logical processors on the same physical processor core are active. While this issue is believed to be rare, the potential impact of this issue could be severe. This issue impacts the servers indicated in the Scope section of this document when using a System ROM revision prior to 2.22 (06/13/2017) for the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9 and HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen9 and a System ROM revision prior to 1.22 (06/13/2017) for the HPE ProLiant M710x Server Cartridge. Intel has released an updated version of microcode that addresses this issue and is included in new revisions of the System ROMs.This issue is not unique to HPE ProLiant servers and could impact any system using affected processors if the updated revision of the Intel processor microcode is not utilized. For additional details regarding the Intel microcode update, reference the appropriate Intel Processor Specification Update on the Intel website at the following URL:Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 processors - Reference SKW144:https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/xeon/xeon-e3-1200v5-spec-update.htmlIntel Xeon E3-1200 v6 processors – Reference KBW95:https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/xeon/xeon-e3-1200v6-spec-update.html6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processors – Reference SKL150:https://www3.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/specification-updates/desktop-6th-gen-core-family-spec-update.pdf7th Generation Intel Core i3 Processors – Reference KBL095:https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/processors/core/7th-gen-core-family-spec-update.html
This issue impacts the following HPE ProLiant servers utilizing Intel Processor Xeon E3-1200 v5 Processors, Intel Processor Xeon E3-1200 v6 Processors, 6th Generation Intel Core i3 Processors, 7th Generation Intel Core i3 Processors, or Intel Pentium Processor G Series Processors when Intel Hyper Threading is enabled with System ROM revisions prior to the version indicated below:HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9 (System ROM revisions prior to 2.22 (06/13/2017)HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen9 (System ROM revisions prior to 2.22 (06/13/2017)HPE ProLiant m710x Server Cartridge (System ROM revisions prior to 1.22 (06/13/2017)Note: While the HPE ProLiant ML10 Gen9 server does support Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 processors, none of the processors currently supported on this platform support Hyper Threading. Therefore, this platform is not exposed to this issue. However, a future System ROM release for this platform will include the updated Intel microcode.
To prevent the unpredictable system behavior described above from occurring, update the System ROM on the servers below to a revision including the updated version of Intel microcode:HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9 – Update to System ROM revision 2.22 (06/13/2017) or later.HPE ProLiant ML30 Gen9 - Update to System ROM revision 2.22 (06/13/2017) or later.HPE ProLiant m710x Server Cartridge – Upgrade to System ROM revision 1.22(06/13/2017) or later. For the ProLiant DL20 Gen9 or ProLiant ML30 Gen9 server:Perform the following steps to obtain the latest version of the System ROM:Click on the following link:http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/portal/site/hpsc?ac.admitted=1447799799154.125225703.1938120508In the ”Enter a product name or number,” type in the server name.Select the appropriate server model.Select "get drivers, software, and firmware."Select the server model again.Select the appropriate Operating System.Select the Category, "BIOS-System ROM."Locate, download, and install System ROM Version 2.22(or later). For ProLiant m710x Server Cartridgesin a Moonshot 1500 Chassis:Perform the following steps to obtain the latest version of the System ROM:Click on the following link:http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/portal/site/hpsc?ac.admitted=1447799799154.125225703.1938120508In the ”Enter a product name or number,” type in the server name.Select the appropriate server model.Select "get drivers, software, and firmware."Select the server model again.Select the appropriate Linux or Windows Operating System.Select the Category, "BIOS (Entitlement Required)- System ROM."Locate and download System ROM Version 1.22(or later), named "System ROM Flash Binary-HPE ProLiant m710x (H07) Server Cartridge."For installation instructions for updating this System ROM, refer to the Moonshot Component Pack Update Guide available on the HPE Information Library, filtered for Moonshot:http://www.hpe.com/info/moonshot/docsFor ProLiant m710x Server Cartridgesin an HPE Edgeline EL4000 Converged Edge System or HPE Edgeline EL1000 Converged Edge System:Perform the following steps to obtain the latest version of the System ROM:Click on the following link:http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/portal/site/hpsc?ac.admitted=1447799799154.125225703.1938120508In the ”Enter a product name or number,” type in the server name.Select the appropriate server model.Select "get drivers, software, and firmware."Select the server model again.Select the appropriate Operating System.Select theCategory "BIOS (Entitlement Required)- System ROM."Locate, download, and install System ROM Version 1.22(or later). For a Windows OS: Download "Online ROM Flash Component for Windows x64 - HPE ProLiant m710x (H07) Server Cartridge."For a Linux OS: Download "Online ROM Flash Component for Linux - HPE ProLiant m710x (H07) Server Cartridge."RECEIVE PROACTIVE UPDATES: Receive support alerts (such as Customer Advisories), as well as updates on drivers, software, firmware, and customer replaceable components, proactively via e-mail through HPE Subscriber's Choice.
