Affected Products: Dell Pro Smart Dock SD25 Dell Pro Thunderbolt 4 Dock SD25TB4 Dell Pro Thunderbolt 5 Dock SD25TB5 Note: The Dell smart dock claims an IP address to support Dell Cloud (DDMC) service. Dell smart docks are designed to allow IT departments to directly manage the dock using DDMC. There are two ways to connect DDMC, and both paths use their own IP address: Cloud connects using the smart dock integrated Wi-Fi connection Cloud connects using the smart dock integrated LAN port IT administrators notice extra IP addresses assigned to the dock on the DHCP server due to cloud service requirements. The IP addresses may stay active until the DHCP lease time expires even if the smart dock is disconnected (depending on the DHCP server configuration). Smart docks can also act as an Ethernet pass-through for the host PC, its assigned IP address is distinct from the one used for DDMC.
The DHCP server assigns IP addresses based on a device’s physical MAC address. Since the smart dock features discrete MAC addresses for the Wi-Fi module and LAN controller, the DHCP server should provide independent IP addresses for each interface to prevent network conflicts, and this is the same concept when the host PC is connected.
This is working as designed. If there is a need for a faster IP release when the dock is disconnected from DDMC, here are a few suggestions to help manage the process: Optimize DHCP lease time to ensure IP returns to the pool quicker. On the DHCP server, enable Conflict Detection, If the server gets no response from the Occupied IP, it assumes that the previous device is dead and safely reclaims the IP.
