At some point during booting up the device, the fan suddenly starts spinning rapidly and manufacturing mode appears on-screen. **** MANUFACTURING MODE ACTIVE **** Press Alt-F to return the system to normal running mode. Pressing Alt + F to exit the screen displays the following message. WARNING: The Service Tag has not been programmed. This system will not function properly without a service tag. The setup utility will launch the Service Tag installer. Press F1 key to retry boot. Press F2 key for setup utility. Press F5 key to run onboard diagnostics. This is happening after one of these startup issues is seen: The issue is seen after updating the BIOS on the device. The device displays a warning that the service tag is not programmed. It works as expected after entering the service tag: WARNING: The Service Tag has not been programmed. This system will not function properly without a Service Tag. A data region in the Embedded Controller (EC) responsible for manufacturing mode and restoring the Service Tag has been corrupted. The data can be corrupted during use, by actions such as a BIOS update.
Note: Perform the following, before starting Step 1: Back up all personal data. For more information, refer to: Back Up and Recovery Proceed directly to step 1 if the manufacturing mode screen appears at boot. Select Continue and boot to the operating system before proceeding to step 1 if the warning message appears at boot. Download the correct version of the BIOS for your product: Dell Tower ECT1250, Dell Slim ECS1250, Dell Pro Tower Essential QVT1260, and Dell Pro Slim Essential QVS1260: Updating the BIOS to version 1.15.0 or later on the device resolves the issue. To download and install the Dell_ECT1250_ECS1250_1.15.0.exe or Dell_Pro_Essential_QVT1260_QVS1260_1.15.0.exe file, refer to the: BIOS Update Guide Dell Pro 24 All-in-One Plus QB24250, Dell Pro 24 All-in-One QC24250, Dell Pro 24 All-in-One QC24251, Dell Pro Tower Plus QBT1250, Dell Pro Slim Plus QBS1250, Dell Pro Micro Plus QBM1250, Dell Pro Tower QCT1250, Dell Pro Slim QCS1250, and Dell Pro Micro QCM1250: Updating the BIOS to version 1.15.1 or later on the device resolves the issue. To download and install the Dell_Pro_QBT1250_QBS1250_QBM1250_QCT1250_QCS1250_QCM1250_SEMB_1.15.1.exe or Dell_Pro_Plus_QB24250_QC24250_QC24251_1.15.1.exe file, refer to the: BIOS Update Guide Dell Pro Max Slim FCS1250, and Dell Pro Max Tower T2 FCT2250: Updating the BIOS to version 1.15.2 or later on the device resolves the issue. To download and install the Dell_Pro_Max_FCM2250_FCS1250_FCT2250_1.15.2.exe file, refer to the: BIOS Update Guide Precision 5860: Updating the BIOS to version 3.4.1 or later on the device resolves the issue. To download and install the Precision_5860_3.4.1.exe file, refer to the: BIOS Update Guide Warning : Ensure that the device is not turned off during the update. Wait for the update to fully complete before carrying on with the solution. Restart the device once the update finishes and press the F2 key at the Dell splash screen to enter the Dell BIOS setup screens. Enable Advanced setup using the toggle switch in the upper left corner of the screen. Go to the System Management page and enter the products service tag in the empty field. Note : The service tag comes in your order documentation and on a label on the device: The service tag is seven letters and numbers. The first character is any letter from a to z. Characters two to seven can be a number from zero to nine, or a letter. Vowels are not used in service tags. (For example: A, E, I, O, U.) All characters MUST be entered in uppercase. Click Yes to save the service tag entered in the service tag field. Click Apply Changes from the bottom of the screen and then click OK to apply the changes made to the BIOS. Go back to the System Management page and verify that the service tag is entered in the correct field. Click exit at the bottom of the screen to restart the device. Press the Alt + F keys simultaneously to exit manufacturing mode if the screen appears during startup.
