Firmware Issue Leading to Uninterruptible Background Media Scanning (BMS) The root cause is a defect in the Toshiba MG08 and MG09 firmware that allows the BMS routine to become uninterruptible. When BMS resumes after an idle period, subsequent host media‑access commands are no longer able to suspend the scan, causing the drive to remain busy until the system‑wide 12‑second timeout expires. Update firmware on Toshiba MG08 and MG09 drives at the earliest available opportunity to avoid impact to data. Caution: Perform firmware updates during a scheduled maintenance window. Ensure that all data is fully backed up, as a power loss during the update can render the drive inoperable.
