Overview When changes are made to tape drive paths, such as adding or removing drives, modifying zoning, or other configuration updates, both PowerScale and the Data Management Application (DMA) must refresh their device information to avoid mismatches. Required Actions Rescan Tape Drives from PowerScale: After making any changes to tape drive paths, initiate a rescan from the PowerScale system to detect the updated configuration. Run an NDMP Probe from the DMA: Once the rescan is complete, perform an NDMP probe from your Data Management Application (DMA) to validate connectivity and update device information. Common Symptoms Errors in the NDMP trace logs, such as the following, may be seen when a mismatch occurs: NDMP_DEVICE_BUSY_ERRNDMP_NO_TAPE_LOADED_ERR Errors such as this may also appear in the messages log: open_device Device tape00x is already openndmpdTapeOpen error opening tape device: tape00x: Device busy.
Why This Is Required: PowerScale discovers tape devices by performing a SCSI probe of the Fibre Channel (FC) pathways. This process uses the isi tape scan command to identify connected tape devices. After the scan completes, PowerScale creates tape device names and links them to the hardware. If the tape environment changes after this process, the DMA and PowerScale may become unsynchronized, causing confusion about which tape drive corresponds to which device.
Steps to Resolve Delete Existing Tape Device Entries: Run the following command to remove all current tape device entries: isi tape delete --all Verify Deletion: Confirm that all tape devices have been removed: isi tape list Rescan Tape Devices: Perform a SCSI discovery of devices from the Fibre Channel (FC) ports: isi tape rescan Verify Discovery: Confirm that tape devices have been successfully discovered: isi tape list Run NDMP Probe from DMA: Initiate an NDMP probe from your Data Management Application (DMA) to update device information. Note: Common backup software commands are listed in vendor documentation. We recommend verifying the exact command with your backup software vendor.
