On some ProLiant DL180 Gen9 servers, the fan may frequently run at a high speed. This can occur if the temperature sensor reading of some components is unavailable due to any of the following: The driver or firmware may be outdated or may be uninstalled The Hard Drive is running in AHCI or Legacy mode Certain third-party PCI cards are installed Options Cards which are not compliant with HPE thermal reporting specifications, like third-party PCI cards and HP/HPE branded 8Gb Fibre Channel HBAs No storage drive installed If this occurs, the internal temperature sensor of the corresponding components will not report correctly and their ambient sensor will take over the protection, causing the fan to run at a high speed.

An improvement of fan noise has been included in the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) version 2016.10.0 (or later). If the fan noise on the ProLiant DL180 Gen9 server seems excessive, perform the following: Examine whether the temperature sensor reading of all installed components is available. To view temperature sensor data, check iLO GUI of the unit for the sensor readings: Navigate to the Information > System Information page Click the Temperatures tab If the temperature sensor readings are unavailable, install the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) version 2016.10.0 (or later) for any missing reading. The latest version of the SPP is available at the following URL: www.hpe.com/info/spp The temperature sensors that lack temperature reading and could cause high fan noise include: 08-HD Max 24-PCI 1 (when a HP Gen9 PCI card is installed at slot 1) 25-PCI 2 (when a HP Gen 9 PCI card is installed at slot 2) 26-PCI 3 (when a HP Gen 9 PCI card is installed at slot 3) 27-PCI 4 (when a HP Gen 9 PCI card is installed at slot 4) 28-PCI 5 (when a HP Gen 9 PCI card is installed at slot 5) 29-PCI 6 (when a HP Gen 9 PCI card is installed at slot 6) 36-LOM Card (when a HP Gen 9 Flexible LOM adaptor is installed) If the fan continues to run at a high speed after the SPP has been installed, contact HPE: In North America, contact Customer Support at 1-800-334-5144.
