When using iSUT 6.1.0 on any HPE platforms running VMware ESXi 8.0 or 9.0, firmware updates for smart components, software, and drivers may fail. Additionally, iSUT may be unable to reboot the platform post-update, resulting in incomplete firmware deployments.iSUT 6.1, when operating in auto-mode, continuously writes logs and temporary files, which fills up the sut-tmp ramdisk and the /opt/sut directory. This occurs even if no updates are being deployed, leading to:• Log file write failures• Update interruptions• Reboot issuesNote:The space in /opt/sut typically fills up within 36 to 48 hours of continuous operation in auto-mode.Definition of Auto-ModeAuto-mode (also known as Auto/Service mode) is an automatic update mode where:• The user configures the mode and polling interval.• iSUT periodically polls the iLO task queue for update requests.• Upon receiving a request, iSUT performs updates automatically.Supported auto-modes:• AutoStage• AutoDeploy• AutoDeployRebootFor more information about iSUT supported modes, refer to the link shown below.iSUT operating modesSymptomshostd.log will display the following message:“ramdisk 'sut-tmp' is full. As a result, the /opt/sut/tmp/libhpsrv.debug_1.log file cannot be written.”Additionally, the vmkernel.log will display messages such as:“Cannot extend visorfs file /opt/sut/tmp/libhpsrv.debug_1.log because its ramdisk (sut-tmp) is full.Admission failure: host/system/visorfs/ramdisks/sut-tmp:sut-tmp”
In the scenario described above, any HPE platforms running VMware ESXi 8.0 or 9.0, and using iSUT 6.1.0.Impact on HPE server management solutionsHPE Compute Ops Management (COM)• Firmware updates may fail due to insufficient space, including upgrades from iSUT 6.1.0 to 6.2.0 or higher.• COM provides a pre-flight warning message when users attempt firmware updates on servers running ESXi 8.0 or 9.0 with iSUT 6.1.0.HPE OneView• Firmware updates initiated via OneView may also fail under the same conditions.• Updates to iSUT 6.2 (or higher) may be blocked due to space issues.Smart Update Manager (SUM)• SUM supports remote node firmware updates for ESXi.• Firmware updates of ESXi servers using SUM will also be impacted, as SUM relies on iSUT for firmware updates.• If the sut-tmp ramdisk or /opt/sut directory is full, SUM-initiated updates may fail similarly.
To resolve this issue, update to iSUT6.2.0(or later). The update can be performed manually or via HPE server management solutions; however, if the server has not been rebooted within the 36 to 48 hours it typically takes to fill up the available space, you will need to apply one of the workarounds to allow the HPE server management solutions to complete the upgrade successfully.WorkaroundsTo successfully perform firmware updates using HPE server management solutions:• Manually delete libhpsrv* files from the /opt/sut/tmp directory. After that, try the firmware update. This will allow the firmware update to proceed without a reboot.• Reboot the server before initiating the update. This clears /opt/sut and frees up the sut-tmp ramdisk. Try the firmware update after reboot.Note:VLCM-based firmware updates using HPE OneView for VMware vCenter (OV4VC) and HPE Compute Ops Management plug-in for VMware vCenter (COM4VC) with the versions listed below are not affected by this issue:• HPE OneView for VMware vCenter v11.0 (or later)• HPE Compute Ops Management plug-in for VMware vCenter v1.2 (or later)Revision HistoryDocument VersionRelease DateDetails3August 22, 2025The advisory has been updated with additional information.2August 18, 2025The Resolution section has been updated with the software version containing the solution.1August 05, 2025Original Document Release.
