An HPE NS204i-x Boot Device may not start, and the controller will lock up, due to a rear disk failure. After a system restart, the server stops at the BIOS Power-On Self-Test (POST) screen for over 10 minutes, and the boot device, volume, and Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) Solid State Drives (SSDs) will not appear in the HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) GUI or the BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU).

If this issue occurs, follow these steps:Power off the server.Remove both drives from the server.Upgrade the HPE NS204i-x Boot Device firmware to version 1.2.14.1025 (or later).Reboot the server to check the NS204i-x Boot Device firmware version from the iLO GUI.Power off the server.Install both drives in the same bay, then restart the server. The iLO GUI should display one working drive and show the other as "Failed", or it displays a failed disk LED on the HPE NS204i-p and NS204i-u.Power off the server.Replace the failed drive. Power on the server and have the controller rebuild the volume.If the issue persists, contact HPE Support.This issue is fixed in HPE NS204 Boot Device firmware version 1.2.14.1025 and later:Firmware Package - HPE Gen12 Boot Controller NS204i-u, HPE Gen11 Boot Controller NS204i-u, NS204i-d and HPE Gen10 Plus Boot Controller NS204i-p, NS204i-d, NS204i-t, NS204i-rNOTE: Firmware version 1.2.14.1026 is available, and HPE recommends updating to this version to address the issue in Customer Advisory a00156392 -Advisory: (Revision) HPE NS204i NVMe Boot Storage Boot Devices - False Drive Messages May Appear for HPE Gen11 or Gen12 Server Systems with NVMe SSDs Attached to HPE NS204i Devices.
