On any HPE Synergy 480 Gen11 Compute Module running VMware ESXi 8.0 U3 with a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4/9.5 as a guest operating system, and configured with either of the HPE Synergy network adapters listed in the Scope section below; the network adapter driver in the RHEL 9u4/9u5 Guest operating system cannot initialize the network adapter interfaces when using the PCI passthrough function. When this occurs, errors with the messages "Failed to enable MSI-X", "Ramrod is stuck" can be seen in the dmesg logs:[ 1.707928] QLogic FastLinQ 4xxxx Core Module qed 8.74.6.0[ 1.721541] qede_init: QLogic FastLinQ 4xxxx Ethernet Driver qede 8.74.6.0[ 1.722009] qede 0000:03:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)[ 1.722816] qede 0000:03:00.0: pci_resource_base = 0xffffa880006e0000pci_resource_len = 0x00008000[ 1.723960] [qed_send_msg2pf:237()]PF[0x00] response: 3 [Type 29][ 1.723963] [qed_vf_pf_rdma_acquire:432()]PF returned status:NOT_SUPPORTED to VFRDMA acquisition request[ 1.724058] [qed_vf_hw_prepare:904()]PF declined RDMA capabilities for VF.Proceeding as L2 only[ 1.725685] [qed_slowpath_vf_setup_int:1656()]No MSI-X vectors are available forRDMA [fp_msix_cnt 14, num_l2_queues 14][ 1.726490] qede 03:00.0: Storm FW 8.72.1.0, Management FW 8.65.6.0 [eth0][ 1.726936] qede 0000:03:02.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)[ 1.727957] qede 0000:03:02.0: pci_resource_base = 0xffffa88000c00000pci_resource_len = 0x00080000[ 1.840231] [qed_enable_msix:1119()]Failed to enable MSI-X [Requested 129vectors][rc -22][ 1.840236] [qed_set_int_mode:1152()]Failed to enable MSI-X[ 1.840238] [qed_set_int_mode:1167()]Failed to enable MSI[ 31.153477] [qed_spq_block:212()]Ramrod is stuck [CID ff008000COMMON_RAMROD_PF_START:0x01 PROTOCOLID_COMMON:0x08 echo 0000][ 31.153492] [qed_hw_err_notify:1231()]Ramrod is stuck [CID ff008000COMMON_RAMROD_PF_START:0x01 PROTOCOLID_COMMON:0x08 echo 0000][ 31.153499] [qed_hw_error_occurred:3570()]HW error occurred [Ramrod Failure][ 31.167951] [qed_hw_init_pf:5800()]Function start ramrod failed[ 31.167954] [qed_hw_init:6145()]init phase failed for loadcode 0x10100000 (rc-16)[ 31.192569] [qed_spq_completion:1171()]Failed to find an entry this EQE [echo0000] completes[ 31.193453] qed 03:02.0: Cannot start slowpath[ 31.207779] qede: probe of 0000:03:02.0 failed with error -16The network adapter interface will not be available for use when this error is found.
Any HPE Synergy 480 Gen11 Compute Module running VMware ESXi 8.0 U3 with a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4/9.5 as Guest operating system, and configured with either of the following HPE Synergy network adapters:HPE Synergy 6820C 25/50Gb Converged Network Adapter (P02054-B21)HPE Synergy 4820C 10/20/25Gb Converged Network Adapter (876449-B21)
The network adapter interfaces can be initialized by applying "qed.limit_msix_vectors=128" to the kernel boot parameters of the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4/9.5 Guest operating system. The issue is still under investigation, and this advisory will be updated when additional solutions become available.
Operating Systems Affected:Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4, VMware ESXi 8.0, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.5
