On any HPE Gen12 platform, the installation of VMware ESXi 8.0 (or later) may fail with an error message similar to the following when the VMware ESXi ISO image is mounted as a virtual CDROM through HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO):When this issue occurs, the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) also fails.This issue is difficult to reproduce, and the exact hardware and firmware configurations that produce this issue are unknown. Therefore, only HPE DL380 Gen12 platforms have been identified to frequently experience the issue.On HPE Gen12 servers with certain hardware and firmware configurations, the error occurs frequently. The VMware ESXi installation must be attempted several times, and the installation can only complete after the installer successfully extracts data from /esxiopt.tgz file.Note:This issue does not affect server generations prior to Gen12.

As a workaround, disable the "Pre-boot DMA protection" feature in the BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) by performing the following steps:Boot into the BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU).Type "ctrl-a" to open the service option menu.Disable the "Pre-boot DMA protection" setting.Save and reboot.Restart the VMware ESXi installation.On server generations prior to Gen12, the "Pre-boot DMA protection" feature is disabled by default; therefore, this installation issue does not occur.For more information about this issue, refer to the following knowledge base (KB):Broadcom - Some OEM manufacturer's BIOS will not allow for machines to boot to PXE or iPXEDisclaimer:One or more of the links above will take you outside the HPE website.
