To address the latest Management Component Transport Protocol (MCTP) architecture change, a minimum controller firmware version of 1.2.14.1017 for HPE ProLiant Intel-based Gen12 servers and version 1.2.14.1018 is required for HPE ProLiant AMD-based Gen11 servers and HPE ProLiant Compute XD685 servers. Due to HPE management architecture updates, HPE NS204i controllers running a firmware version earlier than the minimum version will display an "Unknown" status in the HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) Device Inventory page, causing an MCTP communication failure between NS204i controllers and iLO.Minimum firmware is required to ensure the device's MCTP communication. Therefore, downgrading to an earlier version than the minimum firmware version is not allowed, and the system loses iLO management (e.g., the system cannot detect the NS204i-u controller). This limitation is indicated by any of the following symptoms:Cannot obtain the NS204i controller information (e.g., status, temperature sensor reading, firmware version); however, the controller functionality (boot drive, hardware RAID) is not impacted. No dynamic thermal control over the NS204i-u controller since it cannot get sensor readings via iLO:No thermal risk, but it may be over-cooling (force at 60%/100% fan duty with 25C/35C ambient temperature)High fan speed creates acoustic (noise) issueCannot update NS204i firmware via iLO:Need to update NS204i firmware via the BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) under UEFI
This advisory applies to NS204i-u boot controllers with firmware earlier than the minimum firmware requirement, running on the following servers with a 2P EPYC 9xx5 configuration:HPE ProLiant DL365 Gen11HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen11HPE ProLiant Compute XD685HPE ProLiant Compute DL320 Gen12HPE ProLiant Compute DL340 Gen12HPE ProLiant Compute DL360 Gen12HPE ProLiant Compute DL380 Gen12HPE ProLiant Compute DL380a Gen12HPE ProLiant Compute ML350 Gen12Boot Controllers affected:HPE NS204i-u Gen11 Ht Plg Boot Opt Dev (P48183-B21)HPE NS204i-u Gen11 960GB Spl Boot Dev (P61852-B21)HPE NS204i-u SKH 960GB Spl Boot Dev (P73722-B21)HPE NS204i-u Gen11 1.92TB Spl Boot Dev (P75693-B21)HPE OS Special Boot Devices (P41264-B21/P53016-B21/P58913-B21)NOTE: Intel Gen11 and AMD EPYC 9xx4 systems are not impacted by this issue. The latest firmware versions are backward compatible on Intel-based Gen11 and AMD EPYC 9xx4 systems.
For current HPE ProLiant DL365/DL385 AMD-based Gen11 (EPYC 9xx4) servers, HPE Intel-based Gen12 servers and HPE ProLiant Compute XD685 servers, if upgrading CPUs to 9xx5 CPUs and this issue is encountered, or if the minimum firmware is mistakenly downgraded to an earlier-than-minimum version, follow the below solution to resolve it:Upgrade the NS204i-u firmware to 1.2.14.1018 through the Smart Component with the following steps:Disable MCTP of NS204i-u in iLO GUI:Download and perform the Smart Component firmware update from the appropriate URL below:Windows:https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-windows-fw/p79907742/v258680/cp064461.exeLinux:https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-linux-fw/p1161609642/v258681/rpm/RPMS/x86_64/firmware-9041739931-1.2.14.1018-1.1.x86_64.rpmESXi:https://downloads.hpe.com/pub/softlib2/software1/sc-linux-fw/p1705244753/v258682/CP064463.zipNOTE: If the first attempt fails, reboot the system and flash the component again.NOTE: The warning message "Failed to load dictionary /etc/vmware/ssl/xxxxxx.conf. Init with default values" does not impact the firmware upgrade results and can safely be ignored.Enable the MCTP of the NS204i-u boot controller in the iLO GUI:If the above solution does not resolve the issue, contact HPE Services and reference the following advisory number: a00144855.Revision HistoryDocument VersionRelease DateDetails2March 24, 2025Updated the Title to include "Intel Gen12".
