The SAS HPE Hard Disk Drives (HDD) listed in the Scope section (below) may experience a high failure rate if a disk stays continuously busy. This will be caused by running the drive at a temperature higher than 40 degrees Celius (C) for longer periods of time.If the drives maintain operating temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, disk failure and predictive failure rates will increase. Depending on airflow, the average temperature should be between 36 and 55 degrees (C).Check the HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) GUI to see whether the maximum temperature of the HDD exceeds 40 degrees and determine if steps are needed to reduce the temperatures.
Any HPE servers that support the following HPE SAS Hard Disk Drive (HDD) models:HPE 300GB SAS 12G Enterprise 15K 3yr Wty EH000300JWHPL HDDHPE 600GB SAS 12G Enterprise 15K 3yr Wty 512e EH000600JWHPH HDDHPE 300GB SAS 12G Enterprise 15K 3yr Wty EH000300JWHPL HDDHPE 600GB SAS 12G Enterprise 15K 3yr Wty EH000600JWHPN HDDHPE 900GB SAS 12G Enterprise 15K 3yr Wty EH000900JWHPP HDD
As a first step, ensure your system is updated to firmware release HPD8 (or later) for the drives listed in the Scope.Check the HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) GUI to see whether the maximum temperature of the HDD consistently exceeds 40 degrees. To check the temperature, look under theDrive Detailsto find the Maximum Temperature Celsius field and the drives port location from theSystem Informationin the iLO User Interface:If the drives are running at a higher than average temperatures, enable the "Increased Cooling" option and monitor the HDDs for a one month to see if the temperature rates have decreased. To enable theIncreased Cooling, selectPower and ThermalandFansto access theFan Settings:Then select the "Increased Cooling" option from theFan Settings, as shown in the example above.Monitor the temperatures to see if the temperatures and failure rates decrease after updating and increasing the fan speed. If the drives continue to have a high failure rate and is an exact match with the problem description, contact yourlocal country HPE Customer Supportor theHPE Support Centerand refer to the document a00142517.
