Document VersionRelease DateDetails406/03/2021After further investigation, HPE has confirmed that HPE Smart Array Controllers for Gen10 and Gen10 plus are affected by this issue.Revision table entry for 04/12/2021 is not currently valid.304/29/2021Certain HPE Host Bus Adapters are also affected by this issue.204/12/2021HPE Smart Array Controllers for Gen10 and Gen10 plus are not affected by this issue.108/18/2020Original Document Release. On HPE servers configured with any of the HPE Smart Array Gen8/Gen9/SR Gen10 Controllers, HPE Host Bus Adapters or HPE SmartRAID Gen10 Plus Controllers listed in the Scope section below; "1716" or "1915" Power-On Self-Test (POST) error messages similar to the following examples may be observed:Message displayed on HPE Gen8/Gen9/SR Gen10 servers configured with any of the HPE Smart Array Gen8/Gen9/Gen10 Controllers or HPE Host Bus Adapters listed in the Scope section below1716-Slot # Drive Array - Unrecoverable Media Errors Detected on Drives during previous Rebuild or Background Surface scan.Errors will be corrected when the sector(s) are overwritten. Action: Backup and Restore recommended.Message displayed on HPE Gen10 Plus servers configured with either of the HPE SmartRAID Gen10 Plus Controllers listed in the Scope section below1915 Slot # Smart Array - Drive media errors could not be recovered by RAID protection.Action: Backup and restore the data on the drive. Overwriting the affected blocks should resolve the media errors. These messages appear by design during background surface scan on unrecoverable media errors in fault tolerant RAID 1, 10, ADM, 5, 50, 6, 60. Due to the inherent limitation of RAID 5 fault tolerance this condition may be more common during and after rebuild. The 1716 and 1915 error messages will be logged in the IML Integrated Management Log (IML) of HPE Integrated Lights Out (iLO) after Unrecoverable Media Errors are detected and after a system reboot is performed. When this occurs, HPE Smart Storage Administrator Array (SSA) diagnostic report or HPE Smart Storage Administrator Diagnostic Utility (ADU) version 3.20 (or later) will display an error message similar to the following:Consolidated Error Report:Controller: Smart Array P440ar in Embedded SlotDevice: Logical Drive 2Severity: WarningMessage: This logical drive has Unrecoverable Media Errors Detected on Drives during previous Rebuild or Background Surface Analysis (ARM) scan.Errors will be fixed automatically when the sector(s) are overwritten. Backup and Restore are recommended

Reconfigure the Drive Array and Restore from a Backup performing the following steps:For RAID 5, 50, 6, 60 (Single or multiple logical drives in single array):Backup all the logical drive(s) in the array.Verify the backup data.Delete and recreate all the logical drive(s) using Rapid Parity Initialization (RPI).Note:For HPE Smart array Gen8 controllers, update the firmware if RPI is not present.Restore the data from the backup to all the logical drives. For RAID 1, 10, ADM (Single or multiple logical drives in single array):Backup all the logical drive(s) in the array.Verify the backup data.Erase all disks in the array using SSA/SSCLI with One-pass: Write all zeroes.Recreate all the logical drive(s).Restore the data from the backup to all the logical drives.Note:The 1716 and 1915 POST error messages will not reappear if additional media errors do not occur during a subsequent scan or file system check, or after files have been restored to the reconfigured array from a backup.RECEIVE PROACTIVE UPDATES: Receive support alerts (such as Customer Advisories), as well as updates on drivers, software, firmware, and customer replaceable components, proactively in your e-mail through HPE Support Alerts.
