Document Version Release Date Details 2 09/08/2020 Updated Resolution with the fix, HPE Integrated Lights-Out firmware. 1 03/14/2019 Original document release On HPE systems with HPE Integrated Lights-Out 4 (iLO 4) or iLO 5, Fibre Channel HBAs and/or network adapter settings, for example, virtual World Wide Names (WWNs) are cleared when the adapter firmware is updated. Such settings are normally cleared when the adapter is initially deployed, and are normally configured using tools such as HPE OneView profiles. Upgrade to the following minimum firmware versions before updating adapter firmware: iLO 4 v2.62 iLO 5 v1.37 HPE OneView-managed intelligent adapters exchange data with the management processor. Part of the exchange includes the schema version that informs the data content and format used. Some of the data changes format depending on the schema version indicated by the adapter firmware. The platform universally unique identifier (UUID) is returned by the management processor as part of the exchange, and the format of the UUID depends on the schema version supplied by the adapter. Normal adapter behavior is to assume default values after detecting a platform UUID difference. The supported schema version used by the adapter cannot be determined directly from the adapter firmware version. The normal adapter "default" behavior is being activated due to an anomaly in iLO 4 and iLO 5 firmware. Adapters supporting schema v2.1 and later expect the UUID to be formatted differently than lower schema versions. The iLO anomaly is exposed when the adapter reports schema v3.0. This occurs because iLO 4 and iLO 5 returns the incorrect UUID format in the server info response when the adapter requests data according to schema v3.0. The adapter expects ASCII encoding but receives binary encoding. The difference in expected data causes the adapter settings to revert to default. This symptom could recur if the iLO 4 or iLO 5 firmware is not updated before updating adapters. For example, if the adapter is updated and uses schema v3.0 with affected iLO firmware, the adapter settings clear. An update of iLO 4 or iLO 5 to an unaffected version or an update of the adapter to schema v3.1 could revisit the symptom.
This may occur on HPE systems with iLO 4 or iLO 5 with Fibre Channel HBAs and/or network adapters that are managed using any version of HPE OneView. This may occur on any adapter version that requests schema version 3.0 format.
HPE recommends Fibre Channel HBAs and/or network adapter settings be captured prior to adapter firmware update, in case they need to be restored. In addition, ensure iLO 4 or iLO 5 are at the following minimum firmware versions before updating adapters: iLO 4 v2.62 (or later) This issue occurs with iLO 5 v1.40 through iLO 5 v1.46 and iLO 5 v2.10 through iLO 5 v2.15. This has been resolved in iLO 5 v1.48 and iLO 5 v2.16. HPE recommends updating from iLO 5 v1.37 to iLO 5 v1.48 to avoid issue. And update from iLO 5 v1.48 to iLO 5 v2.30 to avoid other known issue. Update iLO 4 to firmware v2.62 (or later).
