IT operations using the HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) AUX power-cycle API call prior to the iLO completing an internal automatic backup, may result in no backup file available for an iLO restoration. This internal automatic backup process starts with the deletion of the iLO internal backup file, then performs the backup process, which creates a new internal backup file. When the iLO needs to perform an iLO restoration, such as with the removal of AUX power, there is no internal backup file available, and the iLO reverts to the factory default configuration. The iLO automatic backup process occurs while the iLO is going through the iLO initialization process, such as when a reset of iLO occurs. One scenario resulting in no backup file occurs with the iLO firmware update process. During the update process, a reset of iLO occurs, as expected, including performing an iLO backup that initiates the backup file deletion and creation. In a scenario when the iLO AUX power-cycle occurs within 15 minutes of a reset of iLO, the iLO backup process will be interrupted, no backup file will be created or available for iLO restoration. An iLO AUX power-cycle results in the iLO reverting to the factory settings as many of the iLO configurations are stored in volatile memory that is cleared with power removal. As a result, the AUX power-cycle requires iLO configuration restoration. As a result of the iLO reverting to the default configuration:The iLO network connection will revert to the dedicated iLO Network Port. The Shared iLO Network Port configuration will revert to the dedicated iLO Network Port. The server will remain in a powered off state. All iLO user configurations will be lost, including all local accounts. The Administrator password will be the default iLO password found on a sticker or tag attached to the server. The above list only highlights fundamental connectivity and inaccessibility issues. For additional details, refer to the HPE iLO user guide "Information that is restored during a backup and restore operation" and "Information that is not restored during a backup and restore operation" sections.
Any HPE ProLiant server with HPE Integrated Lights-Out 5 (iLO 5).
Reference the iLO user guide "Initial setup steps" section to properly restore the configuration. To mitigate this failing scenario, scan the iLO event log using "Log services" API or the web iLO event log for the case insensitive text "ilo reset" timestamp. Then, wait for a minimum of 15 minutes before performing an iLO AUX power-cycle.This process should be used prior to either using an AUX power-cycle API, or physically removing all power cords or turning off all the power breakers to the server. This advisory will be updated if additional solutions become available.Document VersionRelease DateDetails2August 8, 2025Updated title and scope with additional information and specified in the Description that it is an internal backup file.1August 8, 2025Original document release
