Original Document Release.
On HPE ProLiant/Synergy Gen10 servers running VMware ESXi 6.5 or VMware ESXi 6.7 and installed on a microSD device, NMP warning messages similar to the following are repeatedly generated in the /var/log/vmkwarning log file:
vmkwarning.log
cpu78:65711)WARNING: NMP: nmp_DeviceRequestFastDeviceProbe:237: NMP device "eui.00e04c2020202000" state in doubt; requested fast path state update..
vmkernel.log
cpu53:65686)ScsiDeviceIO:2968: Cmd(0x439e092a3180) 0x9e, CmdSN 0x7963e from world 0 to dev"eui.00e04c2020202000" failed H:0x7 D:0x0 P:0x0 Invalid sense data:0x0 0x0 0x0.
This occurs because the microSD controller in the HPE ProLiant/Synergy Gen10 servers does not support 0x9eh operation code at this time.
Scope
Any HPE ProLiant/Synergy Gen10 server running VMware ESXi 6.5 or VMware ESXi 6.7 and installed on either of the following microSD devices:
HPE 8GB Dual microSD Flash USB Drive (741279-B21)
HPE 32GB microSD RAID 1 USB Boot Drive (P21868-B21)
Resolution
The warnings and failed 0x9e commands described in this advisory do not have any impact on production and can be safely ignored. As a workaround to eliminate these messages from populating the VMkernel logs, perform the advanced configuration described in the following VMware Knowledge Base article:
0x9e commands fail on SD card installed on HPE Proliant/Synergy Gen10 Servers (80416)
