Mainframe Enablers 8.1 and lower versions:If SRDF Host Component output is written to HCLOG datasets, there is a potential loss of log data. SRDF Host Component log data is being written to a dataset instead of JES sysout. When the active HCLOGx dataset fills, the following message is issued: EMCMN75W COMMAND LOGGING SUSPENDED The Messages and Codes manual states: Cause: The log file has filled, and command logging is suspended. Action: If only one log file was declared (DDname HCLOG1 or HCLOG2) in the startup JCL, command logging is suspended for the duration of this execution of the Host Component. If both log files were declared, issue the #SC GLOBAL SWAPLOG command to begin logging commands on the alternate file. However, all log data will be lost between the time the log dataset fills and the time the SWAPLOG command is issued. Even if automation is used to trigger off the EMCMN75W message and immediately issue the SWAPLOG command, there is still loss of log data. Mainframe Enablers 8.2 and above:Changes to the software now ensures that logging is correctly done to the HCLOGs without data loss.
At Mainframe Enablers 8.1 and lower versions, the current process does not automatically swap the HCLOG dataset when it fills. The manually entered SRDF Host Component "SWAPLOG" command is required to resume logging on the alternate HCLOG dataset. Any data from when the dataset fills until the "SWAPLOG" command is issued is lost.
There are now two ways to implement command logging, depending on which version of Mainframe Enablers is installed. Mainframe Enablers 8.1 and lower versions:Attached to this article is a PDF document with solutions to ensure that the HCLOG data is collected without data loss. This document demonstrates how standard IBM-default External Writer, z/OS JCL, and JES2 features resolve this issue. Note: This workaround will still work with MFE 8.2 and above, but the preferred method is in the new version below.
