PCI passthrough (VMDirectPath I/O) enables a virtual machine to directly access a physical PCI device. When passthrough is enabled, the following occurs:The ESXi host driver is detached from the device. The guest operating system assumes full control of the device.ESXi remains responsible only for:PCIe fabric managementIOMMU isolationHardware error reporting (e.g., PCIe AER, CPU Machine Check Exceptions)As a result, device functionality and behavior during passthrough operations are primarily governed by the hardware and the guest OS driver.

This advisory will be updated when a future VMware ESXi release that resolves this issue becomes available. As a workaround, edit the/etc/vmware/passthru.mapfile on the affected VMware ESXi host and configure the affected Host Bus Adapters to use thed3d0reset method.Change the reset method from FLR to Power State Reset (D0 to D3hot) by updating the affected PCI Vendor ID and Device ID entries in the/etc/vmware/passthru.mapfile.Update the reset method manually:Edit the file:/etc/vmware/passthru.map.Add or update the affected QLogic/Marvell Fibre Channel HBA entries so that the applicable PCI Vendor ID and Device ID lines end withd3d0 default. For example, use1077 2261 d3d0 defaultfor the SN1100Q, SN1600Q, and Synergy 5830C HBAs, and use1077 2281 d3d0 defaultfor the SN1610Q HBAs.Save the file and then reboot the host if required.Reference:ESXi Host Reboots When Powering On VM with PCI Passthrough (Marvell/QLogic FC HBA)Acknowledgement: VMware, VMware ESXi, or VMware vSphere are registered trademarks or trademarks of Broadcom Inc. and/or its subsidiaries.
