On HPE Alletra 4140 Gen11 systems that were upgraded or downgraded to SAS expander firmware version 2.17, while it was available, HPE iLO may have reported one or more of the following symptoms.NOTE: SAS expander firmware version 2.17 is no longer available on the HPE website. This advisory remains applicable to systems on which an update or downgrade to version 2.17 was previously attempted or completed. The affected configurations include:Configuration AOne SR932i-p controller connected to two SAS expanders, with logical drives configured using supported RAID levels.Scenario 1 – SAS expander firmware update failureDuring the firmware update from version 1.59 to version 2.17, iLO may report that the firmware update as failed even though one SAS expander was successfully updated. The other SAS expander may remain at the previous firmware version.Scenario 2 – RAID logical drive unavailable after firmware updateFollowing the SAS expander firmware update, one or more RAID logical drives may temporarily become unavailable or enter a failed state and may require recovery.Configuration BTwo SR932i-p controllers are each connected to one SAS expander in a one-to-one configuration.Scenario 1 – Drive removal IML events and RAID logical drive failure during or after firmware updateThe SAS expander firmware update completes successfully. However, during or after the firmware update process, Integrated Management Log (IML) entries indicating that drives have been removed may be generated for drives connected behind the SAS expander. If the affected drives are part of a RAID configuration, one or more RAID logical drives may temporarily become unavailable or enter a failed state. A system reboot restores the affected RAID logical drives to normal operation.
This issue affects HPE Alletra Storage Server 4140 Gen11 systems equipped with SAS expander-based drive drawers. The following Field Replaceable Units (FRUs) may be associated with this behavior:34 LFF drive drawer with backplane – Spare P67328-00146 LFF drive drawer with backplane – Spare P67329-001NOTE: Both drive drawer configurations may contain the same SAS expander board, depending on the system configuration.
Use the following guidance for systems on which an update or downgrade to SAS expander firmware version 2.17 was attempted or completed while the firmware was available.NOTE: Do not initiate a new update to version 2.17 because this firmware version is no longer available on the HPE website.ConfigurationScenarioResolutionConfiguration AScenario 1 - SAS expander firmware update failureIf an update from SAS expander firmware version 1.59 to version 2.17 was already initiated and only one SAS expander was successfully updated, follow the applicable recovery guidance provided by HPE Support. Do not initiate a new update to version 2.17 because this firmware version is no longer available.Configuration AScenario 2 – RAID-configured logical drive unavailable after firmware updateIf one or more logical drives, regardless of RAID level, remain unavailable after the firmware update, refer to the Recovery section below and follow the applicable recovery procedure for the affected RAID configuration.Configuration BScenario 1 - Drive removal IML events and RAID logical drive failure during or after firmware updateThe SAS expander firmware update completes successfully. If drive removal IML entries are observed or a RAID logical drive enters a failed state after the update, reboot the system. The affected RAID logical drive should return to normal operation after the reboot.RAID Recovery ProcedureIMPORTANT:Before proceeding, create or verify a valid backup of all accessible data. Do not disable physical drives as part of this recovery procedure. Disabling physical drives associated with an affected RAID configuration may result in data loss. Contact HPE Support for configuration-specific recovery guidance before proceeding. If the first update attempt from SAS expander firmware version 1.59 to version 2.17 failed after one SAS expander was updated, follow the applicable recovery guidance provided by HPE Support. If both SAS expanders were already updated to firmware version 2.17, shut down the system and perform a power-on or cold boot to allow the expanders to restore access to the attached drives. After the system boots, one or more RAID logical drives may be operational, unavailable, or in a failed state.Follow the recovery procedure provided by HPE Support. Do not clear Smart Array configuration data unless specifically instructed by HPE Support for the affected configuration. If directed by HPE Support, recreate the logical drives using the same RAID type, physical drives, number of drives, and configuration settings as the original logical drives.NOTE: For SSDs, do not perform SSD Over-Provisioning Optimization during this process. After completing the HPE Support-directed recovery procedure, verify that the expected disk volumes and data are accessible. If they are not, stop and contact HPE Support before taking further action. If this issue persists after completing the applicable recovery procedures, contact theHPE Support Center.Revision HistoryDocument VersionRelease DateDetails2September 22, 2026The content was heavily revised to add system guidance and a recovery procedure and to note that SAS expander firmware version 2.17 is no longer available on the website and not to disable physical drives without guidance from HPE Support.1June 5, 2026Original Document Release.
