HPE Superdome Flex 280 Servers configured with SmartRAID 31xx controllers may not find the logical drive volume after a Smart RAID firmware update or card replacement. On rare occasions, SmartRAID 31xx controllers may experience a factory reset during the firmware update process resulting in port discovery mode set to Serial GPIO (SGPIO).SmartRAID 31xx controllers in HPE Superdome Flex 280 servers require the port discovery mode to be set to UBM as this enables the controller to communicate with the storage backplane to properly detect the drives and any existing RAID configurations. However, SmartRAID 31xx controllers that have been factory reset or are new replacement cards are set in SGPIO mode by default.Note: When the port discovery mode is set to SGPIO mode, dual-port SAS drives may also display duplicated entries in the list of connected drives. This occurs because each port of the drive is displayed as a separate device to the SmartRAID 31xx controller in SGPIO mode. How to display the "port discovery mode" setting:From the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Device Manager, select the Smart RAID controller.Select Configure Controller Settings > Configure Port Discovery ProtocolCheck the mode displayed: Universal Backplane Management (UBM) or SGPIO.ORUsing the Smart Storage Administrator Command Line Interface (SSACLI) or SSA GUI tools.Run: SSACLI ctrl <target> show config detailwhere <target> is one of [all|slot=#|serialnumber=#]The output will display either SGPIO or UBM
Any SmartRAID 3154-16i, 3154-24i, and 3162-8i/e controllers used in an HPE Superdome Flex 280 servers.
SmartRAID 31xx controllers in Superdome Flex 280 servers require the port discovery mode to be set to UBM as this enables the controller to communicate with the storage backplane to properly detect the drives and any existing RAID configurations. However, in rare instances SmartRAID 31xx controllers may experience factory reset after a firmware update. Additionally new replacement cards are set to SGPIO mode by default. This issue is fixed in SmartRAID controller firmware 6.81 (available for download from the IOSP:https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/softwaredetails?language=en_US&softwareId=MTX_90cbbd61539042aab978ec46be) or later versions.Outlined below are the steps to properly set the Port Discovery Mode. Backing up important data for safekeeping is a recommended best practice prior to updating or replacing storage controllers.Change the "port discovery protocol" setting to UBM (if set to SGPIO) by performing either of the following:UEFI methodGo to UEFI Device Manager and select the SmartRAID controller.Configure Controller Settings> Configure Port Discovery Protocol > Set Port Discovery ProtocolChange mode for each controller connector port to <UBM>[Submit Changes] > [Back to Main Menu]Repeat for other SmartRAID internal storage controllers.Reset (from the UEFI main menu)OROS utility methodInstall SSACLI if not already installed from the HPE Superdome Flex I/O Service PackRun the following command:ssacli ctrl all showRun the following command for each controller slot listed by the previous command:ssacli ctrl slot=#### modify discoveryprotocol=ubmReboot the OSThe port discovery setting can be checked using the customer tools SSACLI or SSA GUI.Below is an example from the SSACLI command "ctrl <target> show config detail" run on a 3154-24i:where <target> is one of [all|slot=#|serialnumber=#]Port Name: CN0Port ID: 0Port Mode: RAIDPort Connection Number: 0SAS Address: 50000D1F00948800Port Location: InternalPort Phy Count: 4Current Backplane Discovery Protocol: UBMNote:Six entries similar to the above will be displayed for a 3154-24i (6 ports), 4 entries for a 3154-16i (4 ports), 2 entries for a 3162-8i/e (2 ports).Document VersionRelease DateDetails3May 12, 2025Updated Resolution with permanent firmware fix2March 31, 2023Updated "port discovery information" paragraph1April 4, 2022Original document release
