On HPE Platforms configured with Solid State Drives (SSDs) listed in the Scope section below, the data may become inaccessible at 70,000 hours (7.99 years) of operation. While the failure mode is similar, the issue described in this advisory is unrelated to SSD issues detailed in the following bulletins:HPE SAS Solid State Drives - Critical Firmware Upgrade Required for Certain HPE SAS Solid State Drive Models to Prevent Drive Failure at 32,768 Hours of OperationHPE SAS Solid State Drives - Critical Firmware Upgrade Required for Certain HPE SAS Solid State Drive Models to Prevent Drive Failure at 40,000 Hours of OperationIn addition, this issue is not unique to HPE and potentially affects other manufacturers.Important:The HPD4 firmware is considered a critical fix and is required to address the issue detailed below. HPE strongly recommends immediate application of this critical fix for any impacted drives that are still in operation. Neglecting to update to SSD firmware version HPD4 will result in temporary loss of drive operation at 70,000 power-on hours (7.99 years), followed by a drive power cycle. Once this issue occurs, it will require the immediate application of HPD4 firmware in order to restore the drive to an operational state. To be clear, this firmware version serves to both prevent the 70,000 power-on hours issue and recover impacted drives if the issue is encountered.HPE was notified by a Solid State Drive (SSD) manufacturer of a firmware defect affecting certain SAS SSD models (reference the table below) used in a number of HPE Platforms. In addition, SSDs contained within SAN-attached or other external storage enclosures must be checked separately from the drives in the main system.

This issue has been resolved in SSD firmware version HPD4. Refer to the Installation Instructions tab on the download page for each Smart Component.Online HDD/SSD Flash Component for Windows (x64) - VK0400JEABD, VK0800JEABE, and VO1600JEABF DrivesOnline HDD/SSD Flash Component for Linux (x64) - VK0400JEABD, VK0800JEABE, and VO1600JEABF DrivesOnline HDD/SSD Flash Component for VMware ESXi - VK0400JEABD, VK0800JEABE, and VO1600JEABF DrivesFor any HPE Gen9 and Gen10 Platforms, HPE recommends performing an online firmware update during minimal I/O activity. This will not require a system reboot in most circumstances; however, in instances where the online firmware update does not complete successfully, an offline update will be required. After the flash update completes, the Smart Component will provide a message regarding whether the flash completed successfully. For any HPE Gen8 Platforms with HPE Smart Array Gen8 controllers, a system reboot will be required when updating the SSD firmware. In addition, online firmware flashing of drives attached to a Smart Array controller running in Zero Memory (ZM) mode or Host Bus Adapter (HBA) mode is not supported. Only offline firmware flashing of drives is supported for these configurations.Note:HBA mode indicates a configuration in which the controller does not use RAID.Additional information regarding the SSD firmware update process can be found in the following documents:HPE SAS Solid State Drive (SSD) Critical Firmware Update - Software Analysis and Update ToolsHPE Solid State Drive (SSD) Firmware Update Completion Messages Displayed by Smart ComponentRECEIVE PROACTIVE UPDATES: Receive support alerts (such as Customer Advisories), as well as updates on drivers, software, firmware, and customer replaceable components, proactively in your e-mail through HPE Subscriber's Choice.
