On HPE ProLiant Gen8 Servers, the HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen9 server and Smart Array controller tools, "Super-Cap" may be reported as "Battery" or vice-versa, depending on the Smart Array firmware version and HPE Smart Storage Administrator version running. This may be reported in the following tools but is not limited to these applications:Smart Array POST/ IML (Integrated Management logs)HPE Smart Storage Administrator (SSA)POST/IML Message P430/4GB (Firmware 3.02 or earlier):1705-Slot 1 Drive Array - Please replace Cache Module Super-Cap.Caching will be enabled once the Super-Cap has been replaced and charged.POST/IML Message P430/4GB (Firmware 3.54 or later):1829-Slot 1 Drive Array - Please replace Cache Module Battery Pack.Caching will be enabled once the Battery Pack has been replaced and charged.HPE SSA 2.65 P430/4GB cache reporting battery:HPE SSA 3.25 P430/4GB cache showing power source:

For a correct POST/IML message, upgrade the Smart Array controller firmware to version 3.54 (or later).For a correct HPE SSA message, upgrade HPE SSA to version 3.20.12.0 (or later).HPE SSA 3.20.12.0 will report "Power Source" instead of Super-Cap or Battery. When reported as "Super-Cap", "Capacitor" or "Battery", read them as "Power Source".Download steps for HPE Smart Array firmware:1. Click the following link:https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/home2. Enter a product name (e.g., "P431 Controller") in the text search field and wait for a list of products to populate. From the products displayed, identify the desired product and click on the Drivers & software icon to the right of the product.3. From the Drivers & software dropdown menus on the left side of the page:a. Select the Software Type - (Firmware)b. Select the Software Sub Type - (Storage Controller)4. Select the latest release ofOnline ROM Flash Component for Smart Array Version 3-54(or later). Note: To ensure the latest version will be downloaded, click on the Revision History tab to check if a new version of the firmware is available.5. Click Download.To obtain HPE Smart Storage Administrator 3.20.12.0 (or later), follow the same download steps but change the product name to "Smart Storage Administrator" on the search field. In step 3, select "Software - System Management" instead.To find out if a battery or Super-Cap is installed in the system, use one of the methods listed below:Method 1All Smart Array P- controllers in Gen8 systems use Super-Cap except following:HPE Smart Array P430/4G Controller, HPE Smart Array P431/4G Controller, HPE Smart Array P830/4G Controller, HPE Smart Array P830i/4G Controller.Method2Read the spare part number from Super-Cap or Battery and look in HPE PartSurfer to confirm if this is battery or Super-Cap:https://partsurfer.hpe.com/.Method3The physical size of the battery and the Super-Cap is the same, but the battery will have "Ni-MH" (Nickel Metal Hydride Battery) written on it and the Super-Cap will not have "Ni-MH."Battery:Super-Cap:RECEIVE PROACTIVE UPDATES: Receive support alerts (such as Customer Advisories), as well as updates on drivers, software, firmware, and customer replaceable components, proactively via e-mail through HPE Subscriber's Choice.
