The BitLocker recovery screen is displayed after the laptop reboots from running a Windows Update. The laptop does not boot until the 48-digit recovery key is entered. For example, this issue is seen when installing the security update (KB5083769) that was released on April 14, 2026. Entering the BitLocker key is required before booting to the operating system so the Microsoft fix can be installed. Recover from the BitLocker screen: There are generally three ways to locate and enter the BitLocker recovery key: Using a Personal Microsoft Account: (Personal Device) Open a browser on a working device and go to: https://aka.ms/myrecoverykey Sign in to the site using your personal Microsoft account. Locate and copy your recovery key. Enter the key on the screen on your laptop to boot back into the operating systems desktop. Using a School or Work Account: (Company or Organizations Device) Open a browser on a working device and go to: https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey Sign in to the site with your school or work account. Locate and retrieve your recovery key: Contact your company or Organizations IT administrator directly if the key is unavailable. Once the key is secured, enter the key into the screen on your laptop. Boot into the operating systems desktop. Using a flash drive: (Where the key was saved to a USB drive) Insert the drive into the laptops USB port. Open the following file to obtain the key: BitLocker_Recovery_Key.txt Enter the key on the screen on your laptop to boot back into the operating systems desktop. Microsoft fix installations steps: Obtain and install the Microsoft fix (KB5089549) using the following steps: Press the Win and S keys simultaneously to launch Windows Settings. Go to Windows update. Click Check for updates. Run update KB5089549 which was released in May 2026. Press the Win and R keys simultaneously to open a run box. Type winver and click Ok. Confirm that the operating system is now running build 26100.8457, 26200.8457, or newer in the application window that appears.
