It is possible to load vmdk files smaller than 250 GB without problems, but when trying to load files larger than 250 GB the process fails.
Only stream-optimized vmdk files can be upload to a vSAN datastore. VMware stream-optimized file format is a monolithic sparse format compressed for streaming, this format allow vSAN to divide vmdk objects into multiple components.
To upload a vmdk file that is not in stream-optimized format, convert it to stream-optimized format using the vmware-vdiskmanager command‐line utility. For more information, see Virtual Disk Manager User’s Guide; That user's guide is attached in this article and can be found in this external portal also. The Virtual Disk Manager is an utility integraded in Workstation Pro and VMware Fusion When uploading a vmdk file to a vSAN datastore, the vmdk file inherits the default policy of that datastore. The vmdk does not inherit the policy of the VM from which it was downloaded. vSAN creates the objects by applying the vsanDatastore default policy, which is RAID -1. See Change the Default Storage Policy for vSAN Datastores. The vmdk file to must be uploaded to the VM home folder.
