The PowerProtect Data Manager is used to protect the vSphere environment with the VM Direct Engine solution. The virtual machine (VM) synthetic full backups started failing for a few VMs in the VMware Protection Policy. The subsequent execution of the VMware Protection Policy continuously generates the failure with the affected VMs. The backup session log shows: ... The synthetic full backup uses the previous backup files to append the Change Block Tracking (CBT) information and create a new synthetic full backup. The synthetic full backup workflow is not able to open the previous BackupDescriptor.json file on the Data Domain file system as it was unavailable\corrupt. The BackupDescriptor.json can be corrupted when a previous backup is terminated abruptly and the workflow as unable to complete writing or cleaning up the backup data.
A new FULL level backup should be performed on the VM. A FULL level backup creates a new directory and not uses the previous backup data on the Data Domain file system. Open the PowerProtect Data Manager Interface. In the left tree view, go to "Protection > Protection Policies." In the Protection Policies detail pane, select the affected VMware Protection Policy and then use the "Protect Now" option. In the Protect now assets detail pane, use the custom option to select the affected VMs. Select the Next option. In the Protect now configuration detail pane, ensure the "Select backup type" option is set to "Full." Select the Next option. Review the Protect now summary detail pane and then select the "Protect Now" option. In the left tree view, go to "Jobs > Protection Jobs" to monitor the progress and status of the backup.
