High memory usage on CSR or C8000v Warning message in syslog will appear like this: "%PLATFORM-4-ELEMENT_WARNING: RP/0: Used Memory value 91% exceeds warning level 88%" Note that this message is just a warning. In all known cases of this bug to date, there was no customer impact due to the high memory usage. "sh proc mem platform sorted" shows vmtoolsd as a big memory consumer
CSR or C8000v running on VMware ESXi hypervisor Caused by a long, slow memory leak so VM must be running consistently for a long period of time (in one customer's case it took three months but that could vary)
Rebooting the CSR/C8000v should restore the router back to an acceptable baseline memory usage This would be best done periodically on a cadence that prevents memory usage from reaching warning levels in a given customer environment (every three months or 10 weeks would work fine for the original customer here, for example).
A specific process has a memory leak that will slowly cause the memory usage of the VM to climb. This process is third-party code (vmtoolsd) that cannot be stopped from running by a customer. Therefore, the memory usage increase is inevitable. Periodically rebooting the VM would prevent the growth from ever becoming noticeable with syslogs like those mentioned in Symptoms and the bug summary. Most customers probably won't notice this issue if they already reload their VMs on a somewhat regular basis, even monthly. The warning messages alone are harmless but if the growth pushed the VM beyond a certain threshold then we could see unpredictable side effects. NOTE: The memory usage warning messages can occur for other reasons than just this one memory leak. Make sure you see vmtoolsd as a big memory user to confirm whether you are seeing this issue versus something else.
