- After upgrading to 7.3.2, we see the Type 7/8 EVPN updates cause BGP to flap citing MALFORMED UPDATE. - We see following logs: RP/0/RP0/CPU0:Feb 11 11:48:32.246 MSK: bgp[1084]: %ROUTING-BGP-3-MALFORM_UPDATE : Malformed UPDATE message received from neighbor 10.30.0.18 (VRF: default) - message length 3861 bytes, error flags 0x00000008, action taken "Reset". Error details: "Error 0x00000008, Field "MP_REACH-NLRI", Attribute 14 (Flags 0x00, Length 0), Data [08]". NLRIs: [IPv4 Unicast] - Using "show bgp update in error neigh detail" or "show bgp update in error detail" can give detailed message update which caused flap.
- The current box is running 7.3.2 or newer XR release - BGP peer is running older than 7.3.2 release - It affects all XR platforms for which 7.3.2 is runnig.
- As a workaround you can use “update in error-handling avoid-reset” till the peer devices are running 7.3.2 or above. - Filter the Type7/8 on peer till they can be upgraded
- This is due to the fact that the newer RFC/Draft recommendations are integrated in the 7.3.2 release.
