The "Unknown user name" error is thrown by the Nexus 9000 series. - The SNMP User Database is out of sync with the AAA user cache. - The User is not present in the SNMP User Database and therefor unknown by the switch to perform the SNMPwalk - The AAA authentication is performed correctly
This problem occurs on a number of Nexus 9000 series switches running NXOS version 7.0(3)I7(4) that offloads AAA authentication to a TACACS+ server. - This issue has been reproduced in a CALO lab running TACACS+ in an ACS server using the N9K-C93180YC-EX running NXOS 7.0(3)I7(4). - This issue first occurred running TACACS+ in a DCNM server while running NXOS 7.0(3)I7(4) on the 9K. - This issue did not occur when running TACACS+ in a DCNM server running NXOS 7.0(3)I7(3) on the 9K. - This issue COULD possibly occur when a Radius server is used. - This issue COULD possibly occur when another 9K or different Nexus switch is used.
Configuring the user locally on the switch with the proper authentication and privilege parameters makes sure that the user is permanently in the SNMP User Database. Note that AAA will still be used for the authentication if the server is reachable and the default AAA settings are applied to the switch. Make sure to use the snmp-server command if non default authentication and privilege methods are used on the AAA server. Commands: username name password secret and/or snmp-server user username [groupname remote ip-address [udp-port port] {v1 | v2c | v3 [encrypted] [auth {md5 | sha} auth-password [priv des56 priv password]] [access access-list] sync-snmp-password (this command should force the synchronization of the cache and user database, but it doesn't work most devices. The workaround should work without it (optional). The command will not appear in the running-config after it is applied.
Found after upgrading from 7.0(3)I7(3) to 7.0(3)I7(4). Only occurs on version 3 of SNMP, not on version 2.
