This article explains common prompts that users receive when installing applications with Workspace ONE.
iOS Device Prompts There are five types of prompts for iOS devices: Prompt TypePrompt MessageDescriptionApp Installation PromptApp Installation: "[MDM/organization name] is about to install and manage the app [relevant app name]. Your iTunes account will not be charged for this app." For non-supervised devices, each time you push an app from the console, the user will receive this prompt to request approval for app installation. This workflow cannot be avoided unless the device is supervised. Apple ID Prompt The user is prompted to enter Apple credentials. "<Organization Name> is about to install and manage the app <example app> from the App Store. Your iTunes account will not be charged for this app." This occurs during the first-time installation of all the public and Volume Purchase Program (VPP) user-based apps. To avoid the prompt, ensure that all apps assigned to the device are VPP device-based apps. Please also see: Automated Enrollment (formerly DEP) devices prompting iTunes ID and password to install the application for automated device enrollment (ADE) (DEP) devices. App Update PromptApp Update: "[MDM/organization name] is about to update the app [relevant app name]. Cancel/Update" This applies to both supervised and non-supervised devices. If the app to update is in use, the user will receive the prompt. Apple designs this. Users will receive a prompt if the install command is delivered when they are using the targeted app. You need to accept it to update the app. For a supervised device, if the app is not in use, it will silently update. App Management Change PromptApp Management Change: "Would you like to let [MDM/organization name] take management of the app [relevant app name]? The app will close, and your app data will become managed." When the Make App MDM Managed if User Installed option is enabled, Workspace ONE will attempt to assume management of the user-installed app. MDM management occurs regardless of the application delivery method and requires privacy settings to allow the collection of personal applications. For non-supervised iOS devices, the apps get converted to MDM managed only upon the user’s approval. For supervised devices, the targeted app will become managed silently if it is not in use. VPP Invite Prompts Allow App and Book Assignment: "[MDM/organization name] would like to assign apps and books to you." Managed Distribution Registration: "The app you are trying to install requires that you register with Apple's managed distribution VPP program..." After clicking on Continue or Accept invite, you will be directed to the app store to accept the terms. You will receive the invite if the Workspace ONE user has not accepted the VPP invite before and if: the Automatically send invite option is enabled in Apps settings > Catalog > VPP Managed Distribution. The device gets VPP user-based apps auto-pushed.User clicks on the user-based app. Supervised versus Non-Supervised: Non-supervised (regular) iOS devices, users will receive a prompt asking if they allow Workspace ONE to manage and install the app. For supervised devices, the app will be silently installed (for public and user-based app, the user will still be prompted for Apple ID credentials).Supervised iOS devices: Supervised allows for more control through Workspace ONE. You can find Supervised devices under the security tab within the device details view. Apple iOS device supervision: There are two methods for administering device supervision for iOS devices. Apple Configurator: This requires a Macbook with Apple Configurator 2 installed. Physically connect the device, and then you can supervise the device. Note: All previous data and settings will be wiped. Apple Device Enrollment Program (DEP): You have to purchase new DEP devices from Apple. DEP devices will be supervised by default. For more info, please refer to Supervised Devices, Apple Configurator, and DEP guide. For Android public applications: Users will see a "Workspace ONE Application Install" notification under the status bar if you set the push mode as automatic. Upon clicking on this notification, the user will be directed to the Hub's Managed apps list. After clicking into the targeted app, the user will be directed to the Play Store to install the app. Note: To silently install public apps, it is necessary to integrate Workspace ONE with Android for Work. For Android internal applications, if your device supports silent install and has relevant service apps installed (such as Samsung ELM service or Panasonic Service app), the app will be silently installed.
