Updating vCenter Server 5.5 to Update 3 fails with the error: Warning 32014. A utility for phone home data collector couldn't be executed successfully Please see its log file (with name PhoneHome) and vminst.log in system temporary folder for more details. Manually starting the vCenter Server service from the command line using vpxd -s fails with the error: The procedure entry point ?CustomizerGuestType@GuestOSType@GuestCust@@..... ..... could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\ProgramFiles\VMware\Infrastructure\VirtualCenter Server\vpxd.exe Starting the VMware VirtualCenter Server service fails with the error: Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."
This issue occurs when the installer fails to update the deployPkg.dll file during the upgrade process.
This issue is fixed in vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3e available for download at VMware Download.
To prevent this issue: From the vCenter Server machine, navigate to C:\Windows\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed\05550F1E83248734780F0115742A159D\5.5.0. Note: The above path is the default path and may vary depending on the installation. Move the deployPkg.dll file from this location to a backup location.Run the vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3 upgrade. To work around this issue perform one of these options: Rollback the installation by reverting to a snapshot or restoring a backup taken prior to upgrading vCenter Server 5.5 to Update 3: From the vCenter Server machine, navigate to C:\Windows\Installer\$PatchCache$\Managed\05550F1E83248734780F0115742A159D\5.5.0 Note: The above path is the default path and may vary depending on the installation. Move the deployPkg.dll from this location to a backup location.Run the vCenter Server 5.5 Update 3 upgrade. If you are unable to rollback the installation: From the vCenter Server machine, navigate to C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\VirtualCenter Server\ Note: The above path is the default path and may vary depending on the installation. Move the deployPkg.dll file from this location to a backup location.Download the 2134141_deployPkg.zip file that is attached to this article.Extract the deployPkg.dll into the C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\VirtualCenter Server\ directory on the vCenter Server.Start the VMware vCenter Server service and VMware vCenter Management Web Services.
