Note: this is related to https://jira.mongodb.org/browse/SERVER-43132 I think I'm also getting this error after uninstalling `mongodb` (old version) and used this new solution (https://github.com/mongodb/homebrew-brew#setup). It is indeed a duplicate of SERVER-43132, please follow the instructions in this comment and it should fix your issue. That said, the SERVER project is for bugs and feature suggestions for the MongoDB server. As this ticket does not appear to be a bug, I will now close it. Follow the steps here: https://docs.mongodb.com/manual/tutorial/install-mongodb-on-os-x/#tap-the-mongodb-homebrew-tap install via homebrew In terminal run brew services stop mongodb-community in another terminal window run mongo Connection refused.
