Document Subtype: Security Bulletin Document ID: hpesbgn04232en_us Last Updated: 2022-01-14 Release Date: 2022-01-14 Document Version: 1 Potential Security Impact: Remote: Arbitrary Code Execution Source: Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HPE Product Security Response Team VULNERABILITY SUMMARY CVE-2021-44228: HPE core network functions embed a version of log4j(2.x) which contains a remote arbitrary code execution vulnerability when logs contain an attacker-controlled string value. Please see the following link for more information: https://logging.apache.org/log4j/2.x/ Related log4j 2 CVEs and their impact on HPE Network Functions CVE-2021-45046: HPE core network functions embed a version of log4j(2.x) which contains, in certain non-default configurations, a possible vulnerability. This could allow attackers with control over Thread Context Map (MDC) input data when the logging configuration uses a non-default Pattern Layout with either a Context Lookup (for example, $${ctx:loginId}) or a Thread Context Map pattern (%X, %mdc, or %MDC) to craft malicious input data using a JNDI Lookup pattern resulting in an information leak and remote code execution in some environments and local code execution in all environments. Impact on HPE Network Functions: Not vulnerable. HPE core network functions are not vulnerable to CVE-2021-45046 since it requires an explicit configuration for it to be vulnerable and the 5G core network function does not use such a configuration. CVE-2021-45105 : HPE core network functions embed a version of log4j(2.x) which did not protect against uncontrolled recursion for self-referential lookup. Impact on HPE Network Functions: Not vulnerable. HPE core network functions are not vulnerable to CVE-2021-45105 since 1) Network functions don’t use pattern layout in production, it only uses JSON layout. 2) Network function don’t use injection patterns in the configuration. CVE-2021-44832: HPE core network functions embed a version of log4j(2.x) which are vulnerable to a remote code execution (RCE) attack when a configuration uses a JDBC Appender with a JNDI LDAP data source URI when an attacker has control of the target LDAP server. Impact on HPE Network Functions: Not vulnerable. HPE core network functions are not vulnerable to CVE-2021-44832 since it requires an explicit configuration of JDBC data source output for it to be vulnerable and the 5G core network function does not use such a configuration.
