On any HPE platform running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 Server (or later) or Rocky Linux 8.4 (or later), and configured with any HPE NVIDIA/Mellanox-based network adapter, the OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) installation makes the Common Internet File System (CIFS) no longer available to connect to a Common Internet File System (CIFS) share in a Linux operating system. A dummy module was added, disabling the Common Internet File System (CIFS) after an OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) installation. When Common Internet File System (CIFS) files are mounted, the following message is displayed:cifs]# mount.cifs -o username=user, password=userpassword //samba.example.com/cifs /mnt/cifs -vvvmount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the systemmount error(19): No such deviceRefer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel log messages (dmesg)The modinfo command can be used to confirm if the Common Internet File System (CIFS) dummy driver is loaded from the Mellanox OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) or NVIDIA Data Center Infrastructure-on-a-Chip (DOCA) OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED).cifs]# modinfo cifsfilename: /lib/modules/5.14.0-427.13.1.el9_4.x86_64/extra/mlnx-ofa_kernel/fs/cifs/cifs.koversion: 2.31license: Dual BSD/GPLdescription: cifs dummy kernel moduleauthor: Mohammad Kabatrhelversion: 9.4srcversion: 01E451882B55F354B7F130Bdepends: mlx_compatretpoline: Yname: cifsvermagic: 5.14.0-427.13.1.el9_4.x86_64 SMP preempt mod_unload modversionsImportant:RHEL 8.4 and Rocky Linux 8.4 have added support for Server Message Block (SMB) Direct, accelerating the SMB performance over the Remote direct memory access (RDMA). The SMB Direct thus introduced a dependency between the CIFS kernel module and the ib_core and rdma_cm kernel modules. Nvidia/Mellanox OFED (DOCA/OFED) replaces both ib_core and rdma_cm with its own versions; therefore, the Nvidia/Mellanox versions break the compatibility with the RHEL 8.4 / Rocky Linux 8.4 provided modules and the provided CIFS module.
Any HPE platform running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4 Server (or later) or Rocky Linux 8.4 (or later), and configured with any HPE NVIDIA/Mellanox-based network adapter with Mellanox OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) or NVIDIA Data Center Infrastructure-on-a-Chip (DOCA) OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED).
When connecting to a Common Internet File System (CIFS) share, uninstall the Mellanox OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) or NVIDIA Data Center Infrastructure-on-a-Chip (DOCA) OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED), and use the inbox driver instead.Follow the uninstall procedures in the release notes applicable to the OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED) version installed on the system. For additional information, refer to the following URL:CIFS mount returns mount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system even if the cifs module is loadedDisclaimer:One or more of the links above will take you outside the HPE website.
