On any HPE ProLiant platform configured with either of the HPE Broadcom BCM57504-based network adapters with firmware NVM Image version 235.1.164.14 (or prior) listed in the Scope section below, firmware update failures may be experienced when attempting to update to firmware NVM Image version 237.1.148.0 (or later).This issue is caused by a Non-volatile Memory (NVM) fragmentation on the network adapters. As a result, the firmware update process fails when it attempts to allocate a continuous and sufficient memory space for the firmware package, but no such space is available.There are no explicit event logs to confirm NVM fragmentation; however, it can be identified through functional verification.If the system allows downgrading the firmware to a previous version or updating successfully to firmware NVM Image version 235.1.164.14 (or prior), but fails when updating to firmware NVM Image version 237.1.148.0, NVM fragmentation should be considered as the probable cause.

As a workaround, perform the following instructions to defragment the NVM before performing the PLDM firmware update:Go to theBroadcom Websiteand download the Broadcom utility "NICCLI" version 237 (or later) for the respective Operating System environment.Install the NICCLI:Linux:Upload theniccli-<version>.x86_64.rpmto a Linux host and execute the following command for installation:# sudo rpm -ivh niccli-<version>.x86_64.rpm# sudo dpkg –i niccli-<version>.debMicrosoft Windows:Upload theniccli-<version>-win.zipto the Microsoft Windows host and unzip it.VMware:Perform the following steps:Upload the "BCM-niccli_<version>-package.zip" to the VMware host.Unzip the package file and select the respective VIB package for ESXi version, and execute the command for installation:# esxcli software vib install -v <VIB package> --no-sig-checkUse NICCLI to defragment the NVM:List all available Broadcom NICs installed in the system. (Using Linux niccli as example):# niccli --listDefragment the NVM with argument "--defrag"# niccli -i <index> nvm --defrag<index>is the index number for the Port1 of the desired network adapter.Notes:The Secure Boot needs to be disabled in the BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU).For more information on installation and commands for different Operating System environments, refer to the NICCLI user guide included in the installation package.Disclaimer:One or more of the links above will take you outside the HPE website.
