The HPE NVMe High Performance Read Intensive EDSFF E3.S Solid State Drives (SSD) may fail to respond due to a controller firmware issue for the Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC). Reseating or power cycling the SSDs will not bring the drives back up. This firmware issue only affects PM1743 SSDs for PCIe Gen5, other SSDs are not affected by it. Use the following information to investigate what is causing the issue by going into the Integrated Lights-Out (iLO) User Interface. Select the System Information->Storage page->select devices->check Drive Details. Identify whether the following details match: The PMIC firmware that is in the affect list will be before 2023/05 and it can be identified by the SSD Serial Number (SN), the format will be similar to SN S6WTNG0"W4"00160: W=2023 - W3, W4, W5 are March/April 2023, WB = Nov 2023 X2 = Feb 2024 The disk is listed and identified as model, "SAMSUNG_NVMe_ROM" instead of the HPE model (i.e., VV00xxxxxxxxx). OR The firmware version is shown as "DXM00R23", instead of HPK3 or HPK5. Example :
The HPE NVMe High Performance Read Intensive EDSFF E3.S Solid State Drives (SSD) will be affected: P54052-001, HPE 3.84TB NVMe Gen5 High Performance Read Intensive E3S EC1 EDSFF SPDM PM1743 SSD (VV003840KXNTH) P54052-002, HPE 7.68TB NVMe Gen5 High Performance Read Intensive E3S EC1 EDSFF SPDM PM1743 SSD (VV007680KXNTN) P54052-003, HPE 15.36TB NVMe Gen5 High Performance Read Intensive E3S EC1 EDSFF SPDM PM1743 SSD (VV015360KXNTP)
If the SSD fails and cannot be detected, replace with a spare. The drives may only be needed for those manufactured prior to May 2023. This is a fix on failure issue: VV003840KXNTH P57799-B21 P58425-001 VV007680KXNTN P57803-B21 P58426-001 VV015360KXNTP P57807-B21 P58427-001 To prevent this issue from occurring on the functioning SSDs, download the PM1743 PMIC firmware package. Then perform the following steps: Upload the firmware package to iLO repository, e.g., "Firmware & OS Software->iLO Repository-> Upload to iLO repository." Go to the iLO Repository and select the firmware package. Check its status from the Installation Queue, "Firmware & OS Software->Installation Queue." Delete the error or pending task before this update. Power-off and power-on the server to update the firmware. The update will be started when in the BIOS Power-On Self-Test (POST). After the update is completed, check the firmware status from this location, Firmware & OS Software-->Installed Firmware--> Firmware-->select NVMe SSD. Afterwards, select and download either firmware version HPK3 or HPK5. HPK3 Firmware for Drives - VV003840KXNTH, VV007680KXNTN and VV015360KXNTP HPK5 - Universal Firmware Package for Drives - VV003840KXNTH, VV007680KXNTN and VV015360KXNTP Repeat the steps below to install the firmware updates: Upload the firmware package to iLO repository, e.g., "Firmware & OS Software->iLO Repository-> Upload to iLO repository." Go to the iLO Repository and select the firmware package.
