After installing the "Mellanox RoCE (RDMA over Converged Ethernet) ConnectX-4, ConnectX-5 and ConnectX-6 Driver" version 5.4 through version 5.6, or "Mellanox OFED InfiniBand and Ethernet Driver" version 5.4-1.0.3.0 through version 5.6-2.0.9.0 on any HPE platform running SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 / SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 (all Service Packs), and configured with any of the HPE NVIDIA (Mellanox)-based network adapters listed in the Scope section below; the name of the Linux network interface instance may change and render the previous network configuration invalid after rebooting, resulting in a network outage. Example Before installing the Mellanox RoCE drivers on a SLES 12 or SLES 15, the network interface instances may look similar to the following naming convention: eth4 eth7 eth1 eth5 eth8 eth3 eth6 eth0 eth2 After installing the Mellanox RoCE drivers v5.4 through 5.6b on a SLES 12 or SLES 15, the network interface instances may look similar to the following naming convention: ens2f1 ens5f1 ens10f1 ens7 ens6 ens2f0 ens5f0 ens10f0 ens1 Note: The issue occurs due to a change in interface naming scheme introduced with Mellanox driver version 5.4.

Note: The network adapter(s) in this document are affected by a naming standard change for HPE products to help customers quickly and easily identify the specific vendor and model while configuring HPE platforms. As a workaround to continue with the old naming scheme, perform the following actions once the driver is updated to version 5.4 through version 5.6: Rename the file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules as /etc/udev/rules.d/85-persistent-net.rules Reload the driver or reboot the server. The interface name will continue to be in the same format as before (Example: eth0) Notes: Driver version 5.7-x (or later) is not affected by this issue.
