If the drives are added while the system is on, some NVMe drives may enter a "ready" (CSTS.RDY = 1) state too soon to provide Input/Output (I/O) service with a Linux Operating System (OS). The issue will cause the Linux OS to fail to read the partition table after the drive is hot-added and prevent this drive from communicating with the OS for I/O service. This is an issue that a user with administrator privileges will see. This will only occur when the drive is already partitioned and the drive is hot-added. When the issue occurs, an error message will be seen on the console, for example: "nvme3n1: unable to read partition table" It will also be in the system logs, /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog. If a GUI is used, no error indication will be seen, but the drive will not be added. Overall, the drive not being added should not affect any other drive configured to the controller. And the controller can handle drive initialization using its own firmware. VROC also does this independently.

When this issue occurs, wait up to 60 seconds before running the partx or partprobe command below. (Waiting 60 seconds is for this issue, however, the drives are generally ready in less than 5 seconds.) Run the following command: #partx -a /dev/nvmeX Where nvmeX is the device name of the NVMe drive that was added hot. OR Run "partprobe" to re-read all of the partition tables in the system.
