Original Document Release.
When adding, or refreshing HPE ProLiant DL-series servers with HPE Integrated Lights-Out 5 (iLO 5) or iLO 6 in HPE OneView, the following error is displayed:
Unable to discover network adapter information because the data returned from the management processor was not as expected
Below is an example of the message as displayed in HPE OneView:
Although this is a generic message, the message may be displayed because iLO 4 is returning invalid UTF-8 characters in the lldp ManagementAddressOID information for the network adapters. This has been observed when the HPE ProLiant DL-series server is attached to an Aruba switch that is advertising TLV/LLDP "Management address." Switch Details output have the following when this occurs:
Operating System Details:
Switch Details
Aruba Switch - Aruba CX 8325 Switch Series
Firmware Version: GL.10.10.1000
Switch LLDP Global Configuration
LLDP Enabled: : Yes
LLDP Transmit Interval : 8
LLDP Hold Time Multiplier : 4
LLDP Transmit Delay Interval : 2
LLDP Reinit Time Interval : 2
LLDP Trap Enabled : Yes
TLVs Advertised:
Management Address <<<< this is the key value.
If access to the switch is not readily available, review the diagnostics logs in HPE OneView from the "Settings -> "View diagnostics tools page". Search for the string "NetworkAdapters". If the search result finds a "JSON parse error: Invalid UTF-8 start byte..." as shown in image below, check the switch to verify if it is advertising "Management address:"
Scope
Any HPE ProLiant DL-series server with iLO 5 or iLO 6 managed by HPE OneView.
Resolution
This is targeted to be resolved in a future version of iLO 5 and iLO 6.
As a workaround, turn off lldp select-tlv management-address advertisement with the following command on the Aruba switch:
no lldp select-tlv management-address
