A rare issue can cause an HPE Virtual Connect SE 100Gb F32 Module for Synergy to fail to be claimed when a new Logical Interconnect (LI) is created. The issue can occur when all octets of the Media Access Control (MAC) address assigned to the Stacking Domain MAC address contain hexadecimal (HEX) values in the ranges 0x09 through 0x0D and 0x20 through 0x7E. This will prevent the claim of the Virtual Connect (VC) modules from completing and ending in a successfully configured state:If one of the MAC HEX groups is outside of the ranges 0x09 through 0x0D and 0x20 through 0x7E, the MAC address range willnotexperience this claim error. It is best to review the active MAC address range underSettings-> "Addresses and Identifiers" in HPE OneView. Review the starting address range to determine if the active range is at risk.Below are five examples of ranges focusing on the first four HEX values:Start: 54:5F:20:49:50:50 End: 54:5F:20:49:50:CF<<< This range could experience the above failure because 0x54, 0x5F, 0x20, and 0x50 are in the range 0x20 through 0x7EStart: 32:5E:ED:30:00:00 End: 32:5E:ED:3F:FF:FF<<< 0xED is outside the ranges 0x09 through 0x0D and 0x20 through 0x7E, this is a safe rangeStart: 1E:89:BD:F0:00:00 End: 1E:89:BD:FF:FF:FF<<<< 0x1E, 0xBD, and 0xF0 are all outside the ranges 0x09 through 0x0D and 0x20 through 0x7E, this is a safe rangeStart: 5A:D2:2C:30:00:00 End: 5A:D2:2C:3F:FF:FF<<<< 0xD2 is outside the ranges 0x09 through 0x0D and 0x20 through 0x7E, this is a safe rangeStart: 76:18:87:D0:00:00 End: 76:18:87:DF:FF:FF<<<< 0x87 and 0xD0 are outside the ranges 0x09 through 0x0D and 0x20 through 0x7E, this is a safe rangeIf the configuration is currently experiencing any type of "Claim Failure" condition, the following actions will confirm whether the "Claim Failure" is due to the Stacking Domain MAC address containing all hexadecimal (HEX) values in the ranges 0x09 through 0x0D and 0x20 through 0x7E.NOTE: It is possible for the ciDebug.log to roll over to a new log and the "Setting stackingDomainMAC" may not be found if too much time elapses. Search the ciDebug.log as soon possible after creating the new LI for the best chance of finding the events. The ciDebug.log can be viewed under Settings/Diagnostics/View diagnostics tools page. When the Stacking Domain MAC address has at least one octet that is outside the ranges 0x09 thru 0x0D and 0x20 thru 0x7E, the claim will succeed, and the full MAC address will be seen in the ciDebug logs:2022-12-06 18:28:02.987,INFO ,sdl-ws-web,sdl-common-hafnium,com.hp.ci.mgmt.sdl.hafnium.common.services.caimartifacts.ClaimReceiptServiceImpl,null,sdl-pool-writes-17,setStackingDomainMAC():64,Setting stackingDomainMAC 3a:26:21:50:08:58When the MAC address has octets with hexadecimal (HEX) values in the ranges 0x09 thru 0x0D and 0x20 thru 0x7E, the claim fail condition will be shown as a string of characters instead of the MAC address octets:2022-12-06 19:28:26.377,INFO ,sdl-ws-web,sdl-common-hafnium,com.hp.ci.mgmt.sdl.hafnium.common.services.caimartifacts.ClaimReceiptServiceImpl,null,sdl-pool-writes-117,setStackingDomainMAC():64,Setting stackingDomainMAC PPPPPRThe following is an example of the possible results when the issue is present. HPE OneView 5.00 or later with the HPE Virtual Connect SE 100Gb F32 Module for Synergy.
This issue is fixed by updating toHPE OneView 8.20 for Synergy(or later). As a workaround, perform the following steps:Use theEdit Addresses and Identifierspage to disable the current MAC address range (shown after red arrow below):Create a new auto-generated range by clicking theAdd auto-generatedbutton (above yellow arrow). The new range should contain at least one octet that is outside of the ranges 0x09 through 0x0D and 0x20 through 0x7E. This will allow a new unaffected MAC to be selected by OneView and to be assigned to the stacking domain MAC address of any new Logical Interconnects.Document VersionRelease DateDetails2July 17, 2025Updated the Resolution with the permanent fix.1Jan 11, 2023Original Document Release.
