An update done in Offline mode will fail to update the firmware for HPE NVMe High Performance Low Latency Write Intensive Solid State Drives, listed in the scope section below, that are connected to any HPE ProLiant Gen11 server. The U.2 P5800x NVMe drives can be configured either behind the controller or when directly attached to the HPE ProLiant Gen11 server. The following steps will result in the firmware update failing: Install an Intel P5800x NVMe SSD on any supported ProLiant Gen11 Server, that is directly attached or behind a controller (Microchip or Broadcom). Download the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP). Mount SPP iso image and boot into mounted image in "F11 menu." Select the Interactive firmware update and click firmware updates. Add the SPP baseline and start "Inventory" with Gen11 SPP baseline. Click "Review" and "Deploy" after selecting the drive (e.g., EO000400KYDKV) firmware. After deploying, the page displays the update returned with an error message.
If drive firmware from an HPE Gen11 SPP build is updated in Offline mode, any HPE ProLiant Gen11 server configured with one or both of the following drives, that are either behind the controller (Microchip or Broadcom) or directly attached: HPE 400GB NVMe Gen4 High Performance Low Latency Write Intensive SFF BC U.2 P5800X SSD (EO000400KYDKV) HPE 800GB NVMe Gen4 High Performance Low Latency Write Intensive SFF BC U.2 P5800X SSD (EO000800KYDLA)
This issue is corrected in Gen11 Service Pack for ProLiant Version 2024.04.00.00. Update to this SPP version or later to resolve the offline flashing issue. As a workaround for NVMe SSD firmware, the firmware flash can be done without being in Offline mode. For instance, the SPP online can be updated with either of the following methods: Use the Software Delivery Repository as a standalone application. For information on how to perform the update, refer to the Smart Update Manager 9.0.1 User Guide. Use the HPE Smart Update Manager (SUM).
