For any HPE SATA 6G Read Intensive SFF (2.5in) Solid State Drives (SSDs) listed in the Scope section below, in rare instances, a false predictive failure may be reported in the Integrated Management Log (IML). Additional information is collected in the smart attribute log. When this issue occurs, the smart attribute log ID 180 (End to End Error Detection / Correction Rate) will report a worst value lower than the threshold value. As a result, a predictive failure is reported to the RAID controller. Note: In the above example, the smart attribute log ID 180 worst value (1) is lower than the threshold value (5). For smart attribute log ID 187 (Reported Uncorrectable Errors), both "value" and "worst" show 100, which indicates that errors were corrected by the SSD firmware algorithm. To collect the smart attribute log, execute the commands shown below. The SSDs need to be configured in HBA mode. For Linux [root@localhost ~]# smartctl -a /dev/sdb For Microsoft Windows To scan the SSDs: C:\Program Files\smartmontools\bin>smartctl --scan Determine the affected SSD device names from the above output. To collect the smart log: C:\Program Files\smartmontools\bin>smartctl -a /dev/< device name > For VMware vSphere # smartctl -d sat --all OR # smartctl -d sat -a /dev/disk/< SSD name > Additional information and examples can be found at the below link. SSD TBW Disclaimer: One or more of the above links redirects outside the HPE website. HPE is not responsible for content outside of its domain. Besides the smart attribute log ID 180, the other values remain as expected. Additionally, the SSDs reporting this predictive failure are considered fully operational.

The predictive failure described above can be safely ignored. This issue has been resolved in SSD firmware version HPG5 (or later). HPG5 implements a change in Background Media Scan threshold based on a unique retention characteristic. This change addresses the predictive failure described above. The Background Media Scan runs automatically, and it is an internal SSD process. For any SSDs that are reporting the predictive failure, perform the steps shown below. If the SSDs are configured in HBA mode and there are no other RAID volumes on the same array controller: Power cycle (power off and power on) the server to clear the predictive failure. Update to firmware version HPG5 (or later). IMPORTANT: The SSD firmware cannot be updated if the predictive failure is still reported. If the SSDs are configured in any RAID modes, or a combination of HBA and RAID modes: Contact an HPE support representative to resolve the issue. For any SSDs that do not report the predictive failure, update to firmware version HPG5 (or later).
