On any HPE Gen9 platform running VMware ESXi 7.0 U1/U2, and configured with any of the HPE Host But Adapters with firmware versions listed in the Scope section below; when a remote online deployment of ESXi 7.0 firmware smart components for the HBAs is performed using the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) or HPE Synergy Service Pack (SSP), the installation may stop responding for an extended period of time (around 1 hour) and eventually will fail with Return code (-3). This issue occurs due to a problem with memory allocation in the ESXi 7.0 firmware smart components for the HBAs listed in the Scope.

Perform either of the following procedures to deploy the affected Firmware Smart Components: Procedure 1: Apply the following configuration changes on the VMware ESXi 7.0 U1/U2 host to increase the memory limit for the "smx-install" resource group to 200 MB (this allows the WBEM provider to allocate more memory), by performing the following steps: Note: This procedure can be applied only when the firmware update is performed on one HPE Host Bus Adapter at a time, by disabling all other HPE Host Bus Adapters from the BIOS/Platform Configuration (RBSU) and rebooting the system. Add the following line to the file "/etc/sfcb/sfcb.cfg" on the VMware ESXi 7.0 host: provMemOveride: smx-install=200 Perform the the following commands: #esxcli system wbem set -e 0 #esxcli system wbem set -e 1 OR Procedure 2: Deploy the affected firmware smart components in manual mode on the VMware ESXi 7 U1/U2 host, by performing the following steps: Enable SSH on the VMware ESXi host. Log in as root in order to apply the update. Copy the firmware Smart Component in /tmp or any other temporary directory. From the same directory, run the Smart Component (unzip the CPXXXXX.zip file and run the ./CPXXXXXX.vmexe file). Follow the instructions provided by the Smart Component. Log out. Disable SSH on the Vmware ESXi host. Reboot the system for the firmware update to take effect. Note: This is the permanent solution for this specific issue.
