Document Version Release Date Details 2 August 10, 2022 The Resolution section has been updated with the firmware version containing the solution. 1 February 05, 2021 Original document release. For any HPE Synergy compute modules with HPE Synergy 5830C 32Gb FC HBA running firmware version 01.75.07 and driver version 9.4.2.20, Microsoft Windows Server 2016/2019 may fail to boot when booting from a Synergy 5830C 32Gb FC. This issue may occur when the Workload Profile of a compute module is set to "general power efficient compute" or other power efficient settings. When this occurs, the compute module will reboot unexpectedly and boot into Windows Recovery Mode as shown below. Any subsequent attempt to boot will fail. This issue occurs due to a timing anomaly during Windows SAN boot, when the upstream switches do not respond to SAN Congestion Management commands.
In the scenario described above, any HPE Synergy compute modules configured with an HPE Synergy 5830C 32Gb Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter running firmware version 01.75.07 and driver version 9.4.2.20.
This issue has been resolved in Synergy 5830C 32Gb FC HBA firmware version 01.77.12 (or later). Firmware version 01.77.12 has been included in HPE Synergy Service Pack (SSP) 2022.08.01. These versions can be found in the HPE Synergy Software Releases page. As a workaround, perform the following steps: 1. Downgrade the Synergy 5830C 32Gb FC HBA firmware to version 01.73.08 (or earlier). 2. Use Windows Recovery Mode to revert to Synergy 5830C 32Gb FC HBA driver version 9.3.3.20 (or earlier). 3. Disable SAN Congestion Management in the Synergy 5830C 32Gb FC HBA driver. Detailed steps can be found at the end of this advisory. To downgrade the firmware, use either of the following methods: Force downgrade only the Synergy 5830C 32Gb FC HBA using the HPE Synergy Custom SPP 2021.01.01 (or earlier) via interactive deployment in offline mode. OR Use the HPE Firmware Online Flash for HPE Synergy QLogic FC HBA version 2020.01.01 to update the Synergy 5830C 32Gb FC HBA in UEFI mode: 1. Power off the affected compute module. 2. Log into the iLO web interface. 3. Select "Firmware and OS Software" on the left pane. 4. Select "Upload to iLO Repository" on the right pane. 5. In the new menu, select the following smart component: HPE Firmware Online Flash for HPE Synergy QLogic Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters - Windows 2012R2/2016/2019 (x86_64) version 2020.01.01. 6. Select the "I have a component signature file" checkbox. 7. Click the "Upload" button to upload the applicable signature file. 8. Select "Add to Queue" on the right pane. 9. On the "Task Name" field, type in "QLogic Firmware downgrade". 10. For the "Component/Command" option, select the HPE Firmware Online Flash for HPE Synergy QLogic Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapters - Windows 2012R2/2016/2019 (x86_64) version 2020.01.01. 11. Click the "Add to Queue" button. 12. Go to the "Installation Queue" tab in the center pane and confirm that the "QLogic Firmware Downgrade" task is present. 13. Power on the compute module. During boot, the firmware downgrade process will start using the UEFI interface. A system reboot will occur before the Operating System (OS) has initialized, in order to apply the downgrade. 14. Refresh the "Installation Queue" tab to verify the status of this process. To downgrade the driver from the "Emergency Mode", perform the following steps: 1. Select "Advanced Options". 2. Select "Startup Settings". A message similar to the following will be displayed. 3. Select "Restart". 4. During the next system reboot, the "Advanced Boot options" menu will be displayed as shown below: 5. Select "Last Known Good Configuration". This option should boot the OS with the previously loaded QLogic driver. To disable SAN Congestion Management (SCM), perform the following steps: After downgrading the driver and firmware, disable the SCM option in the QLogic driver. This method requires the use of the QConvergeConsole Management Utility CLI: 1. From the windows command line, type "qaucli -g" to display the instance numbers of all QLogic adapter ports. 2. Type "qaucli -scm X --config" to display whether SCM is currently enabled on a particular adapter port. 3. Type "qaucli -scm X --disable" to disable SCM on all adapter ports where SCM needs to be enabled. 4. Reboot the compute module, to activate the changes in the adapter ports. 5. Update to firmware version 01.75.07 and driver version 9.4.2.20 via any method.
