On HPE Synergy 480/660 Gen10 Compute Modules with HPE Integrated Lights-Out 5 (iLO 5) firmware version 2.33, running VMware ESXi 6.7 (or later) and configured with Intel Optane persistent memory 100 Series for HPE, the Smart Update Tools (SUT) via HPE OneView will not update the Optane PMEM firmware.
This issue occurs when using HPE Synergy Custom SPP 2021.02.01, and the firmware baseline of the Server Profile is configured with any of the following installation methods:
Firmware and OS Drivers using Smart Update Tools.
Firmware only using Smart Update Tools
Firmware only
HPE OneView does not list the Optane PMEM firmware for the Server Profile. As a result, the Optane PMEM firmware update cannot be performed.
This issue also occurs when using the Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) with the online update of a remote node method. The SPP does not list the Optane PMEM firmware during deployment stage and cannot proceed with the firmware update.
Note:
Offline firmware updates are not affected by the issue described in this advisory.
Scope
In the scenario described above, the following compute modules with HPE Integrated Lights-Out (iLO 5) firmware version 2.33:
HPE Synergy 480 Gen10 Compute Module
HPE Synergy 660 Gen10 Compute Module
In the scenario described above, the following Intel Optane Persistent Memory 100 Series For HPE models:
Intel Optane 128GB persistent memory 100 Series for HPE (SKU# 835804-B21)
Intel Optane 256GB persistent memory 100 Series for HPE (SKU# 835807-B21)
Intel Optane 512GB persistent memory 100 Series for HPE (SKU# 835810-B21)
Resolution
This issue has been resolved in HPE Integrated Lights Out (iLO 5) firmware version
2.41
(or later).
As a workaround, perform an offline firmware update:
1. Boot the HPE Synergy Custom SPP 2021.02.01 ISO via iLO virtual media.
2. Select either Automatic mode or Interactive mode:
i. If Automatic mode is selected, the firmware will be automatically updated on the compute module without further intervention.
OR
i. If Interactive mode is selected, follow the screen instructions.
ii. Select the Firmware Update option to start Smart Update Manager (SUM).
